Title: #therpgsite
Post by: Kyle Aaron on October 19, 2006, 01:11:33 AM
Since everyone has different IM programs - ICQ, MSN IM, AIM, etc - and since we all like to chat, I thought it'd be good to set up a #therpgsite on the Magicstar server, in irc. I choose irc because it's quite easy to use.

You can get mirc from here (http://www.mirc.com/get.html), but there are many other versions of chat programs. Then click here (irc://austnet/).

A chat room is like a forum, in that in the beginning it'll be fairly quiet. But lurk around for a bit, set your program to flash or ping when someone shows up or talks, and over time a little community of chatters builds up. I've found that chatting to people in real time makes a big difference to the associated forum or hobby, since you find that people you thought were cocks turn out to be not so bad, and vice versa ;)

You'll find me, at least, there each weekday from about five hours ago from the time of this posting, to a couple of hours from now. I usually work at home, or in the evenings, so I have the pc on during the day (my time).

Right next to #rpgnet, eh?

Yep. Same server, different chat rooms. Like living in a house, and there's someone you sometimes like, sometimes hate, across the other side of the suburb.

*shrug*

You want to start a #therpgsite on another server? It's all the same to me. It just needs to be in the same place every day, so people know where it is.

Already had a good chat with someone today. It was all about the game love, instead of boring old game hate. :)

Nah: MagicStar is a fairly good server for gaming folks, with plenty of room for everyone.

And it's registered, so will remain about even in my absence. I'm there now with a few others. Come along!

As time goes on and we get a steady membership, I'll make some other people ops. I don't think we'd need to do much other than kick/ban spammers. But I will have a policy against lurkers. If you don't want to chat - don't log on. Some people are quiet - that's fine. But if you don't have anything to say even once an hour, well... then head to #rpgnet instead.

what is the server/url address for Magicstar?

edit - found it - am I alone?
Title: #therpgsite
Post by: Kyle Aaron on October 20, 2006, 10:39:26 PM
Well I wouldn't have been around at that time, Lawbag, that's my work time. I tend to be online reliably from two hours earlier than the time of this current posting, to two hours after that.

And you have to have patience. For example, one guy just walked into the room. There were four minutes between his walking in, saying hello, not getting a response (because I was posting here), and his giving up and walking out. A litle patience can be a good thing ;)

Just keep the chat window open, and people will come in. Of course you can't do this if you're busy, but if you're busy you won't be chatting! Then make a little habit of it, and gradually the room will build in membership.

Some sort of scheduled chat might help draw in a regular audience on the channel. Doesn't have to be often, but regular and announced well in advance would be good.

We're there everyday. Right now, in fact. I am present in that chat room for four hours a day, this time is the evening in the USA, or around midnight in Europe. Just show up hang around, keep the window open while you're doing other stuff.

If you want to make an appointment to chat to a particular person or people, then say so in this thread, nothing stops anyone using the room at any time.

If you walk in, there's no-one there, and you leave sixty seconds later, then of course it'll flop. Chat rooms are just like forums - someone has to kick it off, and hang in there while it's quiet.

That's been my experience in the past. However, I've not been for years. I went yesterday and today; yesterday they avoided discussing rpgs, turning the topic to other things when I brought them up. Today there was a discussion going on, names for campaign worlds or something.

So in my two brief experiences recently, it's one-for-one. But that's just two relatively brief visits. I can't really say what the culture of the place is now.

But I can say that they had 30+ people logged in and only 2-3 talking, and that their rules do not allow for the full and frank discussion which we enjoy here on therpgsite. I prefer smaller groups who all talk, and that straight talk.

Indeed. Can't blame you at all. I've been absent from my own #rpgchat for several reasons. (Holiday business, plus finishing up my next game which I needed to focus on.)

I'll be back around and people are welcome to come to #rpgchat OR goto #therpgsite to talk about games

I don't shut up ever, but I am on Synirc networks usually talking in a Warhammer channel.  And once a while even on topic!

Oh I could see about visiting yall, but once I get going it would only be the inevitable silence in the room that would quiet me.

And then I would feel like a douche.

I don't have time to hang out on irc anymore. I only go on to run games. I've got two long-term irc games going, a StarCluster game going for seven years and an In Harm's Way game going for three. Each one goes for a half-year before switching. I just finished the season for the IHW game, and I'll be starting up the StarCluster game in January. I used to hang out on #rpgnet, but with my release schedule, I've had to cut that out. If I'm not writing, I'm painting or researching.

Usually I'm on during business hours Down Under, which corresponds to late afternoon and evenings in the Americas, early mornings and midday for east and central Asia, and the middle of the night for Europe.

So just come on, hang around, when you see the mirc bar flashing then someone has turned up :)

The only way to make this place work is as follows:

1. Advertise it!
2. Have some people (more than one) that are willing to hang out for protracted periods of time there, even when the room is empty and then engage anyone who comes in with conversation.

Otherwise, people come in, see the place is empty, and leave, then never come again.

Conversation today:-

"You see before you two doors. Through one door is ONE MILLION GP. Through the other is INSTANT FLAMING DEATH. You don't know which is which. Choose a door."

"My players have learned GURPS, it's just taken them three years. Three years of "wait... what dice are we using?""

"I was reading that Ron Edwards flap on rpg.net and rpgsite today, and was musing that if not for Pundit, I would never have heard of Ron Edwards at all"

"one of my players had a mage whose characteristic was mainly that he had a hood that always left his face in shadow...
so, one time we encountered some cultists...  so we captured a cultist, and he wouldn't tell us where his temple was, and we'd been blundering around in the snow for about an hour realtime
so, the faceless mage says
and, again, fake deep andrew eldritch voice
"i bend him over."
"and i give him a hot beef injection"

"is gygaxian naturism how the fighters on 1e modules never wear pants?"

"i have to admit that i was really sort of surprised that the birth of D&D wasn't even partially out of a primal sea of zeppelin and bong hits"

From #therpgsite:

Back When I Played Recon

Someone's foot fell onto a bunch of punji sticks with a mine buried amongst them.
The party died.

Someone was chasing Viet Cong through a jungle when two logs smashed them "like an AT-ST in Return of the Jedi".
Then he fell on a mine and the party died.

Once, the party ambushed some Viet Cong on bicycles who were shipping dynamite in boxes. One of the rounds punctured the box of dynamite.
The party died.

Once, the party had to guard someone from assassination by the Viet Cong.
The man lived in a mansion, and the party staked out the house really well, so that no one could get inside.
So the Viet Cong crept in the night while they slept, and planted mines outside all the entrances to the house.
Then in the morning, once the PCs were up, someone threw a molotov cocktail at the house and got shot. The PCs ran out of the house b/c it was on fire.
The party died.

Once, the party ambushed some NVA regulars who were driving construction vehicles.
They leapt atop the vehicles, fought the NVA to a standstill in brutal firefight, disabled most of the tanks, and went home to enjoy a job well done.
Except they'd laid mines to disable the vehicles, and forgot they were in the middle of the minefield that had just blown the treads of the vehicles off.
The party died.

Then we stopped playing Recon.

we had this guy who had a sequence of suicidal mexican grenadiers
Pte Nacho and his cousins
what would happen was that the GM said, "if you can see and shoot at the enemy, he can probably see and shoot at you."
So we're strolling along and get ambushed by a platoon of VC
we let off a panic mag and jump behind the berm of a rice paddy
we're carefully planning flanking and calling in mortar support
Ender has his guy get up and charge at the enemy
so 30 VC all shoot at Ender's character as he runs along firing from the hip.
I wasn't there, but apparently he once went through 17 characters in one session.
The most I saw was 4 or 5.

No response from the people in #magicstar. Their webpage claims them to be a "family oriented network." That means they're American and sensitive to everything. Well, fuck 'em.

Let's change to the server,

irc://austnet/

Rules?

"* The server admins will take no liability for what transpires on this server."

That's the Australian way. Austnet (http://www.austnet.org)!

"IRC is an unmoderated medium. No AustNet server, staff member or provider logs or scrutinizes the traffic which passes through the servers. We take no responsibility, and explicitly disclaim any legal liability for the content of any messages which pass through any AustNet server [...]

"IRC may not be suitable for children. Please supervise your child’s IRC session."

I'm here in AUSTNET's #therpgsite. Given the tone of therpgsite, it seems better to use a server which says, "hey, you're responsible for what you do, and for what your kids do," than a server which says, "we're family friendly."

For me  its too big a pain to have IRC connected to multiple servers or two windows open to deal with it, without a really good reason and I already have an RPGchat room on Magicstar to deal with. However, don't mind me.

Quote from: Silverlion;282273For me  its too big a pain to have IRC connected to multiple servers or two windows open to deal with it, without a really good reason and I already have an RPGchat room on Magicstar to deal with. However, don't mind me.

Have fun gents.

Can I recommend pidgin? It's compatible with a heap of different operating systems, and setting up multiple IRC servers on it is a breeze. You can even set it up so that all the chats open in tabs in the same window.

Kyle - what are the details for the austnet room? And can I get to it from eu.austnet.org, or do I have to connect to a different address? I've not seen anyone in there (including you, and we're in vaguely compatible time zones).

Ill stick on the Magicstar one.  Im also on synirc in a warhammer 40K room, though I tend to take the room into everything else geeky when I am there.  (And I tend to get glazed eyes when Warmachine/Hordes are brought up.)

I'll keep the magicstar room on my autojoin list, for what it counts.
