Title: The Wheelchair Friendly Role-playing Gaming trailer
Post by: Dan Davenport on September 20, 2015, 08:03:56 PM
Here's a cause I think gamers can get behind.

http://gofundme.com/rpgtrailer

From the site:

"I already regularly run (for free) non-modified role-playing games that include players with Autism Spectrum, Cerebral Palsy, and at-risk youth in the Spokane area. I would like to be able to provide these games to a much broader geographic area, including rural areas, and groups that do not have their own facilities. The Wheelchair Friendly Role-playing Gaming trailer will make it possible to provide these sessions to many more people over a much wider area and variety of populations. http://www.rpgtrailer.org for more details, photos, updates, etc."

Anything to make gaming more accessible is a worthy cause in my book.

Actually, being pro-accessibility in general is super decent and awesome.

I sometimes wonder about these sorts of funding campaigns, but if it's all on the level this is certainly a good sort of cause.

This sounds awesome, but I have some questions! I apologize if they were already answered in the Q&A which I skimmed. Dan kicks ass for doing the Q&As, but my brain hates the chat format.

1) Do you already have a vehicle capable of hauling the trailer?

2) How many days/weeks per year will be trailer be used?

3) What is the plan for the trailer when not in use?

4) Is this a one person operation? Or do you have a team who may be using the trailer both locally and regionally?

5) What is the plan to deal with gas costs, car repairs, insurance costs, travel expenses, etc for using the trailer to do this charity work?

6) What governmental approvals will you need before being able to use this trailer? Or will all participants be signing releases for any liability?

7) What experiences led you to decide that this trailer is the best option to bring RPGing to the handicapped in rural areas? I have zero experience in this area, but I am somewhat confused why this trailer is the best option.

Thank you!

Fair point. I should stipulate that all I have to go by is the info posted online and the conversations I've had with rpgresearch in and out of the Q&A. I suppose the most I can say is that if it's a scam, it's a very detailed one.

Great questions! Wish you could have been there for the Q&A. :-)

#1) Yes, I own an Infinity QX56 with heavy duty towing package, exceeds towing requirements for the trailer when loaded. I also have a 1986 Bronco HO that meets the requirements as well.

#2) The goal would be 5+ days a week. The current pending schedule to begin would be 2 to 3 sessions per week immediately. I was previously running 9 groups simultaneously at my office and other locations/facilities.

#3) Generally always used in some way related to RPGs. In addition to RPG Research projects and providing RPG sessions, would also be used during transit between locations across the country when speaking at conventions/conferences, etc. Otherwise will be in storage. Would also be used for business purposes such as meeting with clients, facilities administrators, etc.

#4) While I (Hawke Robinson) am the only person behind making this a reality, I usually work with teams of health care professionals in many disciplines, and they would be involved in research, session delivery, etc. For example the recreation therapists at Saint Luke's Rehab and Navios, professors at Eastern Washington University, the parents of the ASD participants in the PAVE Group, licensed mental health workers in private practice with client referrals, instructors of various schools, etc. The professionals are scattered across the country. I have been having conversations with a number of people that would love to be participating as "game master therapists" when this becomes available. I answer more of this question in the Q&A, and in Michael Tresca's 3 part interview. I am registered with the Washington State Department of Health as a Recreation Therapist, which provides oversight and disciplinary measures for health professionals. I am a member in good standard with the Washington State Therapeutic Recreation Association (WSTRA) (http://wstra.org/), and the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) (http://atra-online.com/). If interested, you can read more details about my background here (http://rpgr.org/staff/hawke-robinson).

#5) Currently all my projects are self-funded thanks to my successes in the computer sciences / information technology / information security industries, which allowed me to retire in 2003. Most of the costs you list are already equal-to-or-higher with my paying for multiple non-mobile locations (offices and such), using the current vehicles for transportation of participants, etc. Though the gas mileage will be impacted when pulling the trailer, the trailer will actually lower all my other costs. I intend  to continue self-funding. Down the road, if it seems viable to have multiples of this program, and enough people are trained, then other approaches will be taken to increase the scope.

#6) The Recreation Therapy / Therapeutic Recreation profession has standards that address these issues. That is one of the many reasons why I am using RT/TR methodologies to deliver these services, it maps very well to this model. This includes insurance, government compliance, appropriate waiver forms for participation in TR activities. Many recreation therapists use trailers to deliver other TR modalities to similar populations. While the modality is new, the approach is well established in this profession.

#7) I answer this question at length in the Q&A, the Tresca interview, and on several websites. The short version is that most facilities detract from an ideal RPG experience for many populations. This trailer is built from the ground up specifically to address creating an ideal environment for engaging in RPG for regular and special needs participants. A very brief summary: Most gaming facilities are sub-par environments, many are not wheelchair accessible despite the ADA, many have transportation issues, many have financial issues, most facilities do not have the equipment I do for providing the various forms of RPG (tabletop, live-action, and computer-based) and lack the training for effective delivery of sessions. Hotel costs and other costs are also addressed with this trailer so that it remains affordable to deliver the services much more broadly than without the trailer.

I hope these responses are helpful to assuaging your concerns and grow your support for this effort.
Happy Gaming!
-Hawke Robinson

Hawke, you absolutely rock!!!!

Thank you for the great answers to all my questions!

I have been thinking about the Trailer vs. Public Room issue and what I really like about the Trailer is its kinda recreating a "gaming basement", "man cave", "cozy gaming room" that isn't in the public eye (where there can be judgment) and instead becomes something many disabled gamers may not have been able to access.

Kudos on this great project.

Thank you very much @Spinachcat! I am glad that helped allay your concerns, and your summary clearly states that you "get" one of the many benefits of the idea.

Now if we can just get folks to help spread the word far and wide to donate for that down payment, it can get it built! :-)

HBO's VICE Media Documentary Group Article: "At This Danish School, LARPing Is the Future of Education" - http://rpgr.org/blog/denmark-larping-is-the-future-of-education (http://rpgr.org/blog/denmark-larping-is-the-future-of-education) -- It is a good high-level article on the power of RPGs to increase immersion and other benefits when used in an academic setting. The video that is also embedded in the article is a nice example of the many benefits of LARP for Autism too. Enjoy!

Fortunately they repeatedly mention my research throughout the article.

Hawke, have you contacted WotC for sponsorship?  If they turn you down, go to Paizo. I'd also talk to Goodman Games.

And honestly, Blizzard is a better bet than all of them. Your entire costs would be a whiff for them.

If you want to avoid game company money, consider sponsorship from one or more of the Big Cons - PAX, GenCon, Origins. If you are going to skip any corporate sponsorship, then you need exposure by YouTube notables - Wil Wheaton, etc.

But if I was in your shoes, I would go directly to Vin Diesel (Riddick, XXX, Fast & Furious, Witch Hunter). That dude can't do an interview without geeking out about D&D. He's such a geek that his XXX makeup included tats naming his D&D characters. I would ask him to sponsor it AND do a promo video.

Here's a page with his contact info.

I am still working on a video for my youtube channel: http://youtube.com/rpgresearch (http://youtube.com/rpgresearch)

When I spoke on 3 panels at the 73rd Annual World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCOn 73 / Sasquan) (http://rpgr.org/blog/panel-recordings-from-worldcon-73-sasquan), I discussed the trailer, and had RPG Trailer Fundraiser brochures (http://rpgr.org/documents/rpg-research-project/rpg-research-trailer-brochure-insert-20150721c.pdf/view) at the table, and my research poster during their "Super Science Saturday" (http://rpgr.org/blog/8-foot-rpg-research-worldcon-poster-at-printers) had information, photos, and brochures for the fundraiser. And when I ran multiple Adventurer's League sessions there, I let players know and handed out the brochures.

The brochures have been interesting/dissapointing. While I have been replenishing brochure displays on the RPG Research Project as often as every 2 weeks at some sites, the Fundraiser brochures next to them haven't needed to be replenished at all, very few people are actually taking the fundraiser brochures, while cleaning out the research brochures. Clearly they need to be completely overhauled.

Also followed up from #RPGNET Q&A (http://rpgr.org/news/join-live-rpg-research-q-a-on-rpgnet) suggestions, and subsequent emails form those folks, to contact some gaming company business owners. I'm still working on refining the pitch, so haven't contact the rest. This has so far lead to one Facebook posting to the link, with no traction. Most have responded they are very busy right now, but will try to get back to me, or have not replied at all. Thanks to DW Pearce for sending an introductory email to a couple of them!
So far:
* Shane Hensley of Pinnacle Entertainment Group. He "Facebooked" - https://www.facebook.com/pegshane/posts/10153790081044180 (https://www.facebook.com/pegshane/posts/10153790081044180)
* Dr. G. (Genevra Harker-Klimes) of Savage Mojo. Stated on Sept 20th, "Let me talk to a few of our people and see what we feel we can do for you, then get back to you in a few days, okay?". I just sent a reminder email since I haven't heard back.
* Wizards of the Coast contact information through their website, but never received even an automated response. Will be trying a phone approach when I can. Would help if anyone that actually knew anyone of influence there could do as DW Pearce did and provide an introductory referral email to improve chances of being responded to.

There were a few others that people provided contact information regarding, but I was still refining my elevator pitch, so haven't tried those others yet. Now with HBO's VICE article, hopefully that will help me get my foot in the door to start a conversation.

I have tried to get local news and magazines to check it out. Not surprisingly, they, like most other places, won't follow up unless other people are spreading the word, self-promoted advertising from an unknown person (not celebrity and such), doesn't get much traction.

I did just get a little traction the end of this week though. I attended an exclusive workshop in Google+ Hangout hosted by Ben Dobyns of Zombie Orpheus Entertainment (https://www.patreon.com/zombieorpheus), creators/distributors of The Gamers, The Gamers: Dorkness Rising, The Gamers: Hands of Fate, Journey Quest, Dark Dungeons, Attacking the Darkness, and other projects. I picked up 3 donations.

Several others attending the hangout immediately donated, $100, $25, and $10 respectively! So that was great.
Video from that hangout here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=xro7EsLLtRc#t=2353 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=xro7EsLLtRc#t=2353)

During the Hangout, Ben became quite excited and offered to personally help overhaul the campaign to try to improve things, and may even help integrate into some of his upcoming projects possibly! If that happens, with their huge gaming community following, it should hopefully be greatly improved. I'm still waiting to hear back from him, he has a very busy schedule of course.

Michael Tresca released a 3 part interview online (which he also spread across social networks and various websites):
Part 1 - https://www.patreon.com/posts/interview-with-i-3339244 (https://www.patreon.com/posts/interview-with-i-3339244)
Part 2 - https://www.patreon.com/posts/interview-with-3349315 (https://www.patreon.com/posts/interview-with-3349315)
Part 3 - https://www.patreon.com/posts/interview-with-3349364 (https://www.patreon.com/posts/interview-with-3349364)

Twice this year HBO's VICE Media Documentary group has interviewed me on my research. Yesterday they released an article that includes portions of my second interview - http://www.vice.com/read/at-this-danish-school-larping-is-the-future-of-education-482 (http://www.vice.com/read/at-this-danish-school-larping-is-the-future-of-education-482)

I did just receive an email out of the blue from Jack Berkenstock of The Bodhana group (https://sites.google.com/site/thebodhanagroup/about-us) and Save Against Fear. (http://www.saveagainstfear.com/) Apparently he spoke with his board (501 (c)3), for authorization to run a 1 day fundraiser campaign for The RPG Trailer, they approved it. He is hoping to run it some time in November if all goes well.

He just sent a follow up email stating:
" I had an epiphany that instead of merely reaching one store with a one day
event, why not shoot for more?
My new idea is to create five small donation jars that are designed to look
like your trailer and place them in each store.  Then launch a challenge
with the store to have them compete to see who can raise the most money in
one month.  Then, that donation goes all to you.  I have sent your link to
one of creative forces in Bodhana to see about designing these. "

It is these efforts made by others that will hopefully have a much better chance of catching on than anything I'm able to do on my own at this point.

I'm trying to piece together a promo video, though hopefully The Two Bards and/or Ben Dobyns of ZOE, (and others?) will get a chance to create something that will be far more interesting than what I can come up with on my own. :-)

Ultimately it is clearly going to take people known well in the larger gaming community, helping for this to get traction. I think I have exhausted all the options I can do on my own at this point.

I am open to additional ideas of course.

Happy Gaming!

For my RPG Research Project I am avoiding corporate funding because it will cause a negation of the science/therapeutic communities interest, assuming the work and results to all be "bought out".

However, for the RPG Trailer, I have no problem with corporate sponsorship, other than just a lack of connections to get any response. Anyone that can help would that would be most beneficial.

Well, I can give it a shot if I can get past the screeners. If it is possible to get the word to him, it would definitely be great.
Generally the response I get is that folks tune out self-promotion, and only get perked up if others are pointing to it for them to check out, or others create an introduction.

I will follow up on your suggestions as best I can. Thanks!

The "boffer" LARPing definitely has the most inculcated stigma attached. The non-costume narrative LARPS, and/or the "Clue" like ones tend to have less of that kind of reaction.

There is a huge range, but the costume based, boffer types, are the most visible, and get the most reaction from folks.

Depending on the type, there are many of the same benefits as tabletop RPG, plus the more physical versions tend to have less of the "pudgy gamer" related issues.

The non-athletic, but mobile LARPS are better for some Autism spectrum, because many have coordination issues that can be very frustrating in competitive style LARPs, while the more character-based (rather than personal reflexes based), can be much more accessible to a wider population to receive the many benefits from participation.

Do more marketing!!

Considering how "geek chic" is hot right now, I am sure you could get D&D playing Hollywood stars to help promote you.

I have been trying to increase the awareness now that I have the trailer. For example this:

I just don't have the connections alas. I have been doing this (without the trailer) since 2004. It will likely take someone else with actual connections to make something like you suggest actually happen. Meanwhile, I will keep doing what I can with the resources I have, and hopefully over time word will spread further. :-)

Quote from: ZWEIHÄNDER;924830This is very, very cool. Not sure how I missed this before!

I'd love to donate a couple of ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG (http://warhammerfantasyroleplay.com) books. How can I make this happen?

That would be wonderful! Feel free to email rpgresearcher at gmail dot com, and I can provide you with a postal mailing address.
Happy Gaming!
