If DMs use the actual XP tables, it would take years of play before high level would ever be an issue. And how many campaigns these days really last 3 years or more?

Yeah but to be honest the only 1e discussion in that thread was me running out on the sidewalk and yelling at you kids to keep off my lawn because high level AD&D fighters and magic-users were on par in different ways, and ben saying THAT OLD GUY IS RIGHT and then you guys going back to your loud music and lowered cars and shit.
