Only at levels played by few gamers. Discussions of high level AD&D (aka 13th - 20th) is more about mental masturbation than real issues in actual play.
If DMs use the actual XP tables, it would take years of play before high level would ever be an issue. And how many campaigns these days really last 3 years or more?
But hey, masturbation - mental or otherwise - is what the internet is all about!

I'd have no idea how to check for errata; as for the art, it all looks totally awesome, crisp, and definitely just what I would want there. Let me put it this way: I know there's different art in there because I was told there was, but paging through I can't honestly tell which pieces are originals and what's actually new stuff. Its that seamless.

What printing of the DMG is it a reprint of? There was a major overhaul after 3rd printing which added a lot of appendixes and fixed some errors. That's the version most people know but it would be nice to know which one they reprinted, original or revised edition?

almost everyone has the revised version, it is better, has more stuff. but if they reprinted the earlier version it would leave a lot of stuff out. Sounds like it is the revised from DDs note, and what you say is there.

I think Wizards has been holding out on Amazon for these.
WotC releases are usually up for pre-order on Amazon from almost the moment they're announced, but despite them being up for pre-order on Wizards' site for ages, and the pricing details well known, there's been no Amazon links until very recently.
My guess is Amazon gave Wizards the finger and found another way around to getting them. Or its a third party seller that's importing the stock to get around the apparent embargo.

You won't be disappointed. The only way, for me, that this could be cooler is if they had the original covers and were copies of true first prints. Not that these aren't awesome!
Now I wonder what Wizards does for an encore?
I think the Classic modules need a re-releasing. Hell, sell 'em in a slipcase, all 14, charge $70. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Wouldn't even have to be the pastel covers, either. T1, A1, A2, A3, A4, G123, S1, S2, S3, S4, C1, C2, WG5, WG6...not the mega-modules, either, mind, but the individuals.
That might be a harder sell though since they "just" re-released G1, G2, G3, B2, I6, S2 (and L3!) back in '99 with the Silver Anniversary set. Plus I think in like '98 or 2000 or so, the Tomb of Horrors boxed set had a reprinting of the original pastel covered S1 in it.
I really hope this is proof though that if they loosen up their grip on the old stuff we
will buy it.

Hamsters.
One day I should finish writing Werehamster : the Miffed. The concept went from "werewolf, but six inches tall" to "impotent teenage rage and self-realisation"; comparing it to the WW games, a Werehamster's goal is to learn to be themselves. Not "Oh woe am I", but more "I'm not perfect, and that's okay".
Also, lots of smashing the fuck out of things. Because that's fun too.

I going to call my FLGS tomorrow and see if they are in or if I can prder them. The books silly guys.

R.I.P.
I'm generally fond of animals, except mosquitoes. I'm particularly fond of cats. I also love reptiles. Doesn't mean I don't like dogs. Some breeds do look like total degenerate inbreds but they cannot help that.
Apart from the occasional friendly Pholcus phalangioides we don't have any pets at the moment. I'd like to own a cat but we'd need a better place first.
My parents had some spaniel / collie crosses (A brother / sister pair) since I was about ten, and they were great dogs, absolutely useless but adorable lumps.
The brother swallowed a slug when he was a puppy, and was really ill for a while; the sister had shallow hip indents, and her hip came out of the socket a few times so she had to have surgery on it. She was fine afterwards, unless you weren't paying her enough attention, at which point she'd start limping. It was utterly shameless and 100% effective.
The brother died just after I moved away, and the sister a couple of years after that; she'd came with my parents to see us up in Scotland, and by that point she was deaf in one ear, almost blind, and had arthritis. I really liked those dogs; last time I saw her, my dad took her for a pee on the grass down the road from us, before they got ready to drive back south.
Now they've got a yappy jack russel / spaniel mongrel thing, that's too excitable and badly trained. They let him get away with a lot of things they shouldn't - begging, jumping, etc - and now he's a pain to be around. But hey, I only see him a couple of weeks a year.
We don't have any pets; adorable girlfriend is scared of dogs, and we've looked into cats (Or, a cat), but never actually got one. In a few years, probably.
Pundit is mad, i can feel it in the ether.
This thread isn't about cats or dogs.
Even though he mentioned a cat. Fancy that?
That's my fault but my sreenname is my cat's name ...Marley is smarter than myself. Trust me. Just call me Jo if you must. It's what I answer to IRL.:)
Quote from: HombreLoboDomesticado;561909I do get the impression that the majority of roleplayers are cat lovers. It might be interesting to see a thread on roleplayers' pets and favourite animals. It would also prevent us from getting even more off-topic here.
The other week we noticed that our group have 14 cats in total, and no dogs, and only one of the eight players does not have at least one cat.

You obviously need to kick that contrary bastard to the curb.:)
Yes, I don't have any problem with either cats or dogs, but its time to stop now. We don't do "keetoms" here.
RPGPundit
I got mine this weekend, they are indeed a thing of beauty.
Quote from: thedungeondelver;561693I think the Classic modules need a re-releasing.
I'd buy that immediately. Some of mine are falling apart.

Right? I'd jump on that with a quickness. The reproductions in the '99 Silver Anniversary Collector's Set were amazing.
Except for L3. I could've done a better job on L3. x(

L3 felt out of place to me. It felt like a product rushed to completion. The first two were among my favorites.
I would buy reprinted modules in stacks. I have some original copies in really great shape sealed in plastic but my read/play copies are partially in tatters.

Because it was. Y'see when Wizards bought TSR back in the 90s, Len's first draft/notes were found and they sat on 'em. Then when they started to compile what would be in the Silver Anniversary set, they decided to contact Len and get a full work-up of the module. So he had some back and forth, completed the manuscript and sent it to them.
And they lost it.
So they just took the original draft and published it, instead.

As would I. I'd buy what DCC does with theirs, too - the whole "one bound volume" thing.
If WotC is going to repro modules, they need to do the originals, not the "Return to" crap. The "improved" riddle for Tomb of Horrors was a fucking disgrace.
For those who don't know, Len released L4 through Dragonsfoot (http://www.dragonsfoot.org/php4/archive.php?sectioninit=FE&fileid=278&watchfile=0). I'm not familiar with it, so I can't give an opinion on whether it's any good or not, but it's there if you want it.

There was a lot of drama surrounding it, due to the length of time it took the project to come out, and also because when it did come out it was pretty terrible in terms of editing, etc.
This is my outside observation, mind.

Oh, yes, dear God. No, when I say "repro modules" I mean
re release classic adventure modules not "return to" anything.
Just...just reprint the originals, don't touch anything.
You saw what happened to Village of Hommlet, both "return to" Tomb of Horrors, how SKR fucked up the Giants series, etc.

Absolutely agree on any reprints being the originals, not "return to" stuff (or even the supermodule compilations).
I'll put in a good word for
Return to the Tomb of Horrors, though. My experience with 2e AD&D products was one of futile optimism; I always thought, *this* purchase would be the one that was cool, again, and I was always disappointed. But
Return to the Tomb of Horrors was the one 2e AD&D product I purchased that didn't give me buyer's remorse; I thought there were some cool ideas and good bits in it. Of course, it didn't hurt that they included an unaltered reprint of the original S1 in the box...

Yeah, I vaguely remember some furor about it. I didn't pay attention; I know a lot of people like the L series, but it never rang my bell.

Nor mine, but a lot of people love it and it's considered canonical AD&D goodness so I let it go.
I6 on the other hand, not so much.
Interestingly, Len has mentioned that sometime down the road he wants to get an "L5" published in some capacity and perhaps even an "L6".
I wonder if L7 would have a new form of the old Feign Death spell.

I really loved the mini sandbox setting that came with L1. Some great locations for stuff without too much detail and lots of room to customize.

If Wizards do a reprint run of early modules, they'd have to do them "just as they were", right? I mean the netz had people discussing the corebook reprints having different line breaks and such. They'd be selling to the OSR crowd, who like 'em just like we remember 'em - and I'll compare the reprint with my original just to be sure.

They got the modules in the Silver Anniversary collector's set pitch-perfect, no reason they can't do it again.*
...
*=I will now wait for the rush of people telling me the paper was .1mm too thick or the art was wrong or something, which, haha, doesn't matter a fucking bit.
Quote from: languagegeek;564325If Wizards do a reprint run of early modules, they'd have to do them "just as they were", right?
I'd want a reprint, not a revision with changed text or updated art, if that's what you mean. But I'm not anal about how dark the art is, or exactly what paper was used, or if they smell like the old modules did when you unwrap them, or stuff like that. I think WotC did a pretty good job with the AD&D reprints; something along those lines would be just fine, IMO.
My books have arrived today!
I haven't had time to investigate properly yet, due to the pesky "work" thing, but they certainly look gorgeous. Possibly the only complaint I'd have from the outside is that a cardboard slipcase would have set them off perfectly, but that's nitpicking to the nth degree.
(I'm even more excited about my copy of Other Dust arriving, but that's a week or so away...)
I bet some of you would be entertained to hear I just made some progress convincing a 4E dnd group that playing 1E would be a refreshing change.
*Keeping my fingers crossed*
I have the urge to run a 1E game with the 2E non weapon proficiencies.
When are the reprint books available?

Now!
They're been available in the states for a week or so, Esdevium in the UK sent theirs out to stores last weekend, and idk about the rest of the world.

Just ordered them from Amazon!
I hope I survive the nostalgia attack when I get them in my hands!

Just curious, did Amazon list them as being in stock? Last I checked they were listed as out of stock.
Got mine :D Dang they are nice.

I did see some 'out of stock' messages, but there were plenty of places on amazon to get the books.
I wonder if Amazon itself was out of stock but not some of the suppliers?
Beats me
The FLGS in Eugene had a set in shrinkwrap.
I was shocked by how thin they were. I have 4 issue TPBs of comics that are thicker than that book.

Thin, but man, is the 1E DMG full of win. So much goodness in that book.
