This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The next big bang?

So as not to derail the original thread.

Now the early 90's was when I really got into rpg's - I'd dabbled prior to that but it was 1st ed.Werewolf that truly started the ball rolling for me.

Now I know my taste in games runs counter to 'pundit's but to me there was an energy that built up in the RPG world during the late eighties that exploded into the nineties which has only just stopped/started to stop.

But what does this mean for gamers - is there going to be another burst soon of the excitement that happened then and earlier?

Well, I guess we know who to blame now. ;)

We've already had our burst, when D&D 3.0 revived the hobby.

4E will probably create a new surge of interest and enthusiasm for D&D and RPGs in general when its released if its a drastic enough, and a good enough change in the system to warrant new interest.

One thing's for sure though, the Big Bang will come from trad/mainstream games rather than from the indie scene, IMO of course.

The next big bang will probably be when Angelina Jolie dumps Brad Pitt (serves him right) for Tommy Lee because she finally sees the Pamela Anderson sex tapes and is smitten wy the size of Lee's dick....

Smitten the same way you were?

Hmm, I am kinda smitten at the thought of an angelina jolie sex tape showing her sucking off tommy less, but other than that, no.

Well we all knew you were a thick racist fatbeard, but I don't think any of us knew you were homosexual.  Now get the fuck out of my thread.

The term "fatbeard" is bigoted and hateful, as is attacking someone for being homosexual.

The difference between people like me and you is that I'm not a sanctimonious hypocrite.

What a helpful contribution, Dominus Nox, we're ever so grateful for it.

On-topic, I agree that we already had our surge of interest in the hobby - new editions of D&D. I can't say it did much for me personally, but it sure as shit brought in a lot of new gamers, and made a lot of old gamers spend more money and be encouraged to game again.

For me, GURPS 4e was effective in the same way. I'd game with a friend some time before, caught up with him socially, one day we were in Mind Games, he was drooling over the new editions, saying he might buy it, I said, "I'll buy it and play it if you play it with me - even if we're just gaming one-on-one for a while." He said yes and that broke a gaming drought of some months for me. The gaming drought had been useful, I'd written d4-d4, but it was time for it to end. A new edition of a game did that.

Right this is a two part post.  Second part should be skipped if you dislike petty bickering.

First part

So would the consensus be, in these days of MMO's and pdfs, that the market has grown and the genres splintered to such a degree that a singular event cannot really kick-start the hobby every so often, due to the signal to noise ratio of there being so much product - indie and mainstream?

Scroll down for the second part.

1. I like how your not denying that you're racist and stupid.  Though I do find it amusing that a self proclaimed racist has the temerity to call out people for being "bigoted and hateful"

2.Show me where I attacked anyone, anyone at all, for being homosexual.  I may have used the word as a descriptor, but I have not said anything along the lines of 'Nox is so gay, what a lamer for being a fudgepacker'.  If I didn't know any better I'd think I was back at the BP.

3.The real difference between people like you and me is that you are quite possibly the most bitter, self deluded, ignorant misanthrope I have ever had the misfortune to come across.  From what I've read of your many posts, I would surmise that you may have a psychological problem that is being woefully ignored.  But I'm not responsible for your treatment so I get to aggravate you further.  Because whilst I'd disagree with your accusation that I'm a "sanctimonious hypocrite" I'd be the first to accept that I'm a callous git.

Oh by the way, in case you forgot about it.

No.

We had D&D in the 1970s, then D&D and RQ and CoC and Palladium in the 1980s, then WoD in the 1990s, and now D&D again in the early 2000s. So every ten years there's a big leap in gaming, usually due to some version of D&D.

How often do you want the kick-start to be? Are you like those studio executives who think that if a movie doesn't have the success of Titanic, it's a dreadful failure?

Patience, Grasshopper. Another big hit will come. And it'll probably be D&D.

3.5 got me back in sit-down gaming after a couple years of mainly online play. I'm hoping I can use 4th to convince some chums to pick up their dice once more and kack some fucking umber hulks.

I pretty much want new shit whenever my pals decide they're tired of roleplaying and start wasting their money on minis and online Magic tournaments.

Heh, Yeah you're probably right.  My only problem there is I don't like/play dnd.  Guess I'll stick with Risus for a bit :)
