Title: The Last Parsec core
Post by: jan paparazzi on January 18, 2016, 06:04:00 PM
Isn't the Last Parsec core a little bit on the light side with the setting material? I mean SW is usually pretty concise, but this is hardly anything at all. Or is most of the setting spread out between other books like Leviathan and Scientorium?

I steer clear of Savage Worlds these days since I really don't enjoy the system all that much, so I haven't payed much attention to this.

Reasonably sure this is deliberate on their part, their 12 page primer opens with:
QuoteThe Last Parsec is a story of exploration in a limitless universe of mystery and adventure. Unlike most Savage Worlds settings, the background is very light—a "sandbox" of stars, planets, and stranger celestial bodies, all waiting to be explored by intrepid beings from across the galaxies.

That said, they have published a remarkable number of little adventures for it already. Including a number of free single sheet adventures.

How much of use is there in the core? I've been keeping an eye on it since it's savage worlds, but haven't gotten into it yet.

Yes to both. The TLP core book isn't a typical setting book in that it's just meant to give a very broad overview of the setting, primarily the races and JumpCorp. PEG wasn't even going to do a core book right away but so many of the fans called for one that they went ahead and created it. Most of the traditional "setting" info comes from the plot points and the other adventures. You don't have a single large sector detailed like you do in a lot of other games, but fortunately if that's your thing there are a number of other resources that can help with that. Personally, if I ever ran TLP I'd draw heavily on resources from Stars Without Number to create more of a sandbox to play in, but that's just my own preference.

As an aside, I think High Space looks to be a little more in line with my own tastes, so I plan on backing that Kickstarter. If I ever run Savage Worlds sci-fi, that'll probably be the game I use. Though with any luck, I can still use some of the stuff from TLP because some of it is pretty good.

Thanks for the tip. The fun thing about SW is there are a lot of different options.

Definitely. TLP certainly isn't bad and the Leviathan plot point looks like it could be a lot of fun, but for my own tastes what I've seen of High-Space works better. But that just adds to other stuff like Slipstream or Daring Tales of the Space Lanes to give people more stuff to pick from, which is always a good thing.

Honestly, most people could get away with just the primer and be fine. After all, the Sci-Fi Companion is the true core book for TLP. That said, the actual TLP Core does have some interesting bits. We get some background info on the races (and one or two alternate takes on existing races) along with an adventure generator and some more equipment/ships/vehicles. I think there is a small bestiary, too. The background setting itself is pretty sparse, but that seems fitting for the game as TLP isn't about presenting a single well-defined region but rather leaving open a wide area for the GM to make up all kinds of new things and providing setting info/locations through adventures.

I'd probably rate it a 6/10, personally. It's far from essential but if you're going to run a TLP campaign it isn't a complete waste of money. My favorite part is probably the adventure generator, which could be useful even for other sci-fi games.
