This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Talking Wushu....

Quote from: flyingmiceMy only problem with Wushu is the people out there who suggest it for any purpose, no matter how appropriate or inappropriate.

This never bothered be because Wushu seems like the sort of game that really could be used for just about any genre, assume the players are otherwise the sort who will enjoy it.  Also, it is small and free, so saying, "Go check out Wushu for that," seems harmless.

The endless litany of Exalted recomendations, on the other hand, is just annoying.

I find it quite annoying because Wushu only works 'for all genres' because it doesn't actually support anything.  It's like R/P/S as your sole resolution mechanic. Hey! you can do anything with that!

No flavor, no support, nothing.

Even then, I think Wushu falls down in gritty dangerous settings.  When everything is descriptive narration you have to all work together perfectly to avoid anyone 'breaking the mood' by using a revolver to take out 8 mooks on their turn.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Mysteries are another genre where it doesn't work well.

Edit: I'd also like to say that I don't have any problem with those who enjoy Wushu. It's just not the multi-genre panacea that some make it out to be. If you're having fun with it then more power to ya'.

Quote from: SpikeFlyingmice hits exactly why I did decide to comment on Wushu. Its ubiquity.

Ironically, the very thing I might be tempted to use Wushu for is already taken.

Wushu strikes me as a perfect game to take with you on the go and in your head for pickup games with people when you've got a few hours to kill. The rules are simple enough to memorize, it only requires a few dice... both common and easily available in many places if you forget yours, and it's fast.

For that, however, I already have 'There is No Spoon' memorized. :D
You could get that same sort of use out of Sherpa or Risus as well.

Sherpa is actually designed to be palyable while you hike.

Quote from: SosthenesRespectability? People chiming in all the time when someone's looking for a new system, even when he or she explicitly mentioned that he doesn't want to use Wushu? Fanboys...

The fanboys are the worse. I've started tossing them on ignore (at rpg.net) so I don't have to read about how Wushu kicks every other game's ass. It's not the game...it's the fans.
Running: HarnMaster, Barbaric 2E!, and EABA.

Man, I agree but there's a 100 or more games we could make that statement about aren't their?

That said, it's a rules light generic engine, it arguably can do any genre just like Gurps can or Hero or Savage Worlds.  The real question is does it do that genre well?

Gurps 3e did not do supers well (I can't speak to 4th), I would not reach for Wushu for my game of political intrigue and skullduggery in Renaissance Rome.
