(I tried posting this on TBP, but I forgot that OSR games don't really exist over there. Maybe here will be more helpful.)
Seeking some advice for anyone familiar with Stonehell. If necessary, consider this a spoiler warning.
I have one of the PCs a quest to find whether the Vrilya still exist and to court them as allies. Neither the lawful players nor the NPC giving the quest realize that the Vrilya are somewhat isolationist and chaotic.
The players have found the vrilya on level 6 and are planning on meeting the faction leaders soon.
My problem? I didn't think this through enough when I gave the quest and didn't realize this until I had my players in their midst. So far, I've let the guards let them through because they are intrigued by the mission, but I can't imagine the leaders will have any interest in assisting with a surface war against chaotic humanoids.
The players are wary but have not yet figured out the vrilya are basically evil. I feel like I've put them in a diplomatic mission, but they're going to have to fight (and fail) to get out again.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
I've been running Stonehell around 8 months now, various PC groups. One group encountered (peacefully) a lone vrilya female on level 4 who was on a shopping trip up to Kobold Korners, otherwise my PCs haven't dealt with them yet. So I've been thinking about them a bit but not much play experience yet.

Seems fine to me.
I would say, the Vrilya are only likely to attack if it looks a net positive for them, or if the PCs insult them. If they can get some larger benefit without fighting I'd think they would take it. They might for instance sic the PCs on a rival faction (eg the trolls if they're still around) - "First slay the mountain trolls, then we'll talk".

Huh. Even that is enough for me to gain some more time to think more about it. Thanks for that!
(Plus, the avg party level is only 5.2, so they may need to excuse themselves before they go to war with mountain trolls!)
