This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[Star Wars again] Kinda Ironic

Taking a look at my Star Wars D6 (revised and expanded) book this week, and a little free-bee handout called "Mos Eisley Shoot-out" fell out of my homemade book cover.  Forget I jammed it in there so many years ago.

Anyone else get this?  It's basically a quick start pamphlet to give you an idea of what the RPG is like.  This was from 1997.

So, why do I title the thread "Kinda Ironic"?  Well, just take a look...Grid combat, movement and ranges measured in squares, combat using miniatures.  (The other side of the handout has scenarios for the game as well as advertisements for the game itself.

Just made me chuckle a little.  Many of the things people who have argued in favor of D6 have pointed at as the weaknesses of D20 are right there used to sell the D6 system.  In the other direction, it shows just how un-revolutionary the Star Wars CMG really is, since we have very close to the same thing being done 11 years earlier.

That's a cool looking pamphlet.  Don't see anything ironic about it, though.

I can't count the amount of times I've been in D6 vs. D20 Star Wars (on both sides of the argument, I'll add) arguments where D6 fans bring up how they don't like playing "Chess" with miniatures, ect, ect.  So how was their beloved game sold to beginners?  By playing "chess" with miniatures.

...okay, not to be rude or anything, but why bring it up like that?  It's a troll.  You're starting up an old argument with this find, without any specific target.

It's a cool pamphlet.  Who cares about D6 vs. D20 Star Wars rpg arguments, and why present your find in that context?  It's bound to just stir shit.

If that wasn't your intent, I think you should consider the context of your posts more critically.  You've got a lot of enthusiasm for Star Wars gaming, but you keep harping on this D6 vs. D20 thing, and that's far less interesting (IMO).  I'm much more interested in stuff like your rpg.net thread about your campaign prep for saga edition's release.

well, OK, thanks...I wasn't trying to present it that way at all (especially since I like both editions of Star Wars).  Just thought it was...well...Ironic.  What can I say?

Ignore the thread topic people, this really ISN'T a D6 vs. D20 thread, nothing to see here!

Dr Rotwang!

I got a couple of those. Never played 'em, but they're neat.

EDIT: You can argue that the boardgame approach to RPG combat is an easier interface for the non-gamer.

Sure.  And sorry if that came out harsh.

I really do dig that pamphlet.  As Doc Rot says, boardgame style intros probably work real well for those just getting into roleplaying.

And there's a map.  Gotta love maps.

As I argue in this thread, I think interface is the real thing that needs to change to draw more people into the industry.

Perhaps this Boardgame/Mini interface is what it will take to draw people into RPG's?

A complete thread hijack, but does anyone have access to the handouts and opening script for Crisis on Cloud City (not the Sabacc cards/rules)? I have a copy of the adventure but the handout section is missing :( I would be much obliged if people could help me out.

The crazy thing is that Star Wars is one of the few settings lucky enough to get two very different, yet great takes on it. However, rather than create more options, people seem more focussed on excluding one or the other. I understand most of the arguments for and against but I still love them both.

Agreed!

I'd agree, too, as long as we also agree that Han shot first.

I got the irony and I thought it was rather funny, particularly given I'm normally on the "I prefer d6 because it's not so dependent on miniatures and positioning" side of that particular debate.
