Title: RPG Creatures - A New Online Bestiary
Post by: Cloister on March 09, 2010, 02:34:05 PM
Hi

My name is Nicholas Cloister and I'm a freelance illustrator/concept artist.
I'd like to inform everyone about my Bestiary Blog, that is currently in motion.
If you like RPGs, and if you enjoy creatures in particular, I think you should check it out.

It is called RPG Creatures and can be found here: http://rpg-creatures.blogspot.com
What you will see are creatures that are carefully illustrated and thoroughly described.
There are also system independant stats, that I hope are easily interpreted and transformed to fit your game of choice.

Here is an example creature from the site.

I intend to make this one of the best bestiaries of all time.
Welcome!

Nice work. Wow, your art is gorgeous. Is it ok to print out a monster illustration to pass around to players during a game... strictly non-commercial of course?

Groovy!

This should really be in News/Adverts, but seeing as i can see it potentially of being of interest to all of us, i'll leave it here unless any of the other mods/admins decide otherwise.

I really like the Jarma-Loh. The illustration is awesome, and the write up is very intriguing. I'm feeling very likely to end up using it one of these days :) Thanks much, great resource.

I sense an easy 'port over to RuneQuest / BRP.  Me likey.

A minor niggle: the Ra'khuni is described as "an ape creature", though it clearly has a tail.  Is it a "monkey creature" or "an ape-like creature"?  Just feeling pedantic about my primatology. :)

Sigmund: Thanks! You may print the creatures for personal use (includes small parties/groups/boards/clandestine gatherings/necromantic guilds etc, up to a reasonable amount of people)

One Horse Town: Sorry for posting in the wrong forum. Not my intention. I will understand if I'm moved. Thanks a lot!

Benoist: Thank you!

Ian Absentia: So, it is the tail that differs an ape from a monkey. Being Swedish I misunderstood. I thought that big human looking primates were apes. In this case I figured the Ra'Khuni resembled a gorilla, and therefore used 'ape' rather than monkey. If that's incorrect I might change it. So, does this mean the Gibbon is an ape?

Phantom Black: Thanks! I'm happy to be here.

At the gross level, yes: monkeys have tails (though so do "lesser" primates, like tarsiers, lemurs, etc.); apes do not.  So, yes, a gibbon is an ape (though classified as a "lesser" ape -- we're very picky about who we'll admit to our club).  It starts getting less intuitive when one considers certain "tailless" monkeys, like macaques.  Calling the Ra'Khuni "ape-like" would suggest that it looks mostly like an ape, without necessarily being an actual ape.

Like I said, I was just being pedantic.  Your English is far better than my Swedish. :)

Great work!  Was I right about the RQ/BRP connection?

Ian Absentia: I only played RQ a couple of times a very long time ago, so I'm not familiar with the system (can't remember anything, but some illustrations). And I didn't think BRP when I decided on the stats. Many games I played used 3d6 for human characteristics, so I went with that (believing it to be recognizable and understandable to most players), and with the rest I just picked something simple that made sense... trying to leave it as open as possible while still saying something.
Thanks for the primate lesson! :)

RPGPundit: Thanks a lot!

I can see there has been 63 visits to my blog referred directly from the RPGsite, staying for an average of 2 min and 51 seconds. So this post ís doing some actual good leading people to the bestiary. I guess I had better start working on the next creature! :)

No, it would be the bump of fame that that awesomeness that is me generates to everything and everyone who is graced by just being around me.

You know, the very thing that drives all the pundit-haters out there absolutely nuts with impotent helpless rage?

Very, very good.  You might try posting at ConceptArt.org to generate hits.  You could even win some COW contests with your work.

From the looks of this you'll find a welcome reception, and advice to fine, fine tune your finely tuned skills.  This is certainly professional level stuff you have here, but no need for me to tell you that.

RPG Pundit: Thanks for the bump! :)  Oh, you must replace your avatar. It actually scares me. That character is just so very discomfoting... Fantastic film! I must see it again.

Sigmund: Really! Thanks!

Peregrin: Thank you!

Malvor: That's what I like to hear!

Xanther: Thank you for the advise! I have visited ConceptArt regularly for some years now, and I have actually participated in quite a number of COWs. Though, still to this day, I have not managed to win a single round. I comfort myself with bad luck and ignorant voters...  ;)

I can also report of demonic presence on the blog...
