Anyone have some insight into the average speed a relatively normal person can climb a rope and ladder?
I know a person can speed climb a rope pretty fast. But have not found a-lot of data on a more paced climbing rate. And oddly zero on ladders. You'd think the Fire Department at least would have some numbers by now.
Average movement rates in the Lejendary Adventure RPG are very accurate as far as the parts I was able to easily fact-check.
It gives climbing rope at the rate of 3 feet every 3 seconds;
Climbing a latter at the rate of 5 feet every 3 seconds.
It also places a maximum of 30 seconds holding on time, both hands, full weight dangling (15 seconds with one hand, 10 seconds if the one hand is the off hand). This would fit the case if you're climbing the rope without the aid of any surface to lean or brace on. If you can use your feet, hanging on top goes up to 3 minutes.
Rates and duration can be modified upwards according to skill, downwards according to encumbrance. These are just the averages.

That seems much too slow to me.
What average person? Average American has a climb speed of 0 or in worst case, -9.8ms^2.
I used to be one of the fastest rope climbers in gym class. That was a straight up climb of a thicker than average rope though. Maybe 20ft. Gotta love the more relaxed safety standards of many a decade ago.
About a half meter a second might actually be not too far off. Ladders are a tricky thing. My old job back in the 90s had alot of climbing involved. Just never thought to take notes.
From experience I'd say going up a freestanding ladder vs a propped up ladder is harder as you have to be careful not to tip the ladder left or right. Whereas a ladder braced against something, or a fixed position one, you dont have to be as careful as its less likely, or not going to, sway side to side.
