This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Shared creativity, I think. Also escapism.
Read my blog, Monsters and Manuals, for campaign ideas, opinionated ranting, and collected game-related miscellania.

Collectively creating epic and entertaining stories...

Exploring alternative scenarios of historical stories...

Gaming has a tremendous advantage over traditional fiction publishing...

With a RPG games, you have the opportunity to recreate a wide variety of fantasy and history. The best part is you can iterate... that is to say, repeat a selected experience multiple times. Slight variations in the composition of the story itself, or with the makeup of the players creating the story create a new and more robust experience.

In addition, it allows the participants an opportunity to explore subjects and themes that traditional writers partially or entirely ignore.

Iv'e never understood the preoccupation of gamers who state that X or Y Game Designer is only a wannabe fiction writer.

After all, it would seem to me, that X or Y writer (Who may indeed be a master storyteller), doesn't actually have the time or inclination to fully explore the consequences of the story they are telling.

What aspects of creating collective stories while roleplaying do you find vulgar?

Really? The players automatically bring a story to the table with them they want to tell or re-tell. When I say players here, I mean GM's as well. Game designers are in a different category entirely as they define the boundaries of the game.

With the mundane cases it's I slayed Monster X, and discovered treasure Y.

With other cases it's lets see how far can we go to bend or break the mechanics to slay Monster X, and define what Treasure Y should be.

With other cases it's  a metagame: lets see if we can offend the other players or break the mechanics of the game.

And yet others play to create unique and epic stories that are enjoyable by all the participants, but not necessarily all other gamers.

There's alot of different ways to tell a story, categorizing all of that as vulgar, are we?

Nah, it was just a running gag about me being opposed to the notion that "roleplaying games are about telling stories". See there for background. It was just jest on my part. :)
