She drinks sharks blood for ritual purposes and, for days afterward, has all black eyes, an eruption of sharks teeth in addition to her own in her mouth, and a voracious appetite. Hopefully, the benefits of the ritual are worth the price.

A priestess of Neptune or a God of Travel, she made it her life to help travelers returning from a war across the sea. The voyage home was dangerous. Across a vast, demon infested forest, she traveled to the straight where many ships were lost against the coral. There, alone, she watches from a small lighthouse and guides the ships as they navigate the narrow, treacherous pass.

She is a Priestess of Neptune who was seduced by Jupiter while the god was disguised as a fish. She had children from the dalliance, but Neptune was so enraged by Jupiter's audacity that he made all of the Priestess' children be half fish and half human. This is where the merfolk came from.

Cool. Any ideas as to the rituals purpose?

Something perpendicular. She's called the spirits of her people, embodied in large statues scattered around the island, to cull her own people.
