I picked up a couple fading suns products at a convention recently, just the way I like 'em: used, in good condition and cheap.
Well, I've always known that FS was the WH40K RPG, and the prods I got confirmed it. Hell, in 40K marines call each other "Battle brothers" in in FS there's a bunch of warrior monks in an organization called "Brother Battle" that are somewhat less extreme versions of space marines.
But I like it and plan to stick with it for a while, maybe even converting it to systems I like.
So is anyone here into it or are there any websites with active columns or forums about it?
I got some free adventiure modules for rogue trader from rpg.now, on the sure bet that anything written for RT could fairly easily be adapted to FS.
BTW, I'm not interested in the d20 version.
I picked up a copy recently, and have enjoyed reading it.
In general it feels a little more laid back and more Catholic than Warhammer. Which feels more Fascist and over the top than Catholic. (My friends word would be "Nazi-ish." Not having more exposure to fascism in his historical knowledge.)
I have had many people mention when seeing my alien mustelids for one game, named the Lorzh, that they reminded them of the Vorax (I almost typed Lorax, boy would that be an amusing difference.) Now I see why. The art work of those aliens look similar, and they've got similar body and facial structures. My Lorzh differ a bit culturally. (No one would EVER "civilize" a Lorzh in the fashion of the Fading Suns aliens) Then again 2 ton eight armed (rather than six) mustelids are a bit--interesting. Sadly since I've removed them from their original setting but kept the aliens for later use, I need a new way to introduce them to humanity.
I may just use them in something I run locally rather than publish because I don't want people to think I'm thefting from FS. Despite the independent development. At least my Lorzh like humanity--consider them "little brothers," since we're both mammals, and have had similar behavioral patterns. Even if now we're "weaker" than we might have once been when we were savage warriors like the Lorzh.
Mechanically the Victory system seems to be a roll under d20 system, unless I've misread. I'd always thought (when reading about it online) it was more White Wolfish.
The basic difference is that 40K is a parody, while FS is not (at least one of the former writers, Jimmy of Grognardia fame, is a devout and practicing Catholic who treats the Church of the Pancreator very respectfully).
Fading Suns is good stuff. Its an easy conversion to whatever system you like. If you have lots of 40k minis, then Savage Worlds would be great.
Their core system is okay. Nothing astounding, but it works. We are supposed to be seeing a new edition later this year.
I've looked thru some FS stuff, it looks OK as a WH40K rpg.
I never thought of Fading Suns as "catholic science-fiction", but maybe you've got a point.
A great setting, though. It's kinda like Dune, but less otherworldly, less weird, and more gameable, full of adventure ideas. You can do a ton of things in that setting.
I hope to see Fading Suns in print again.
