Imagine that you are a 4th level Gnome Adept and while adventuring with a stalwart band of heroes you are killed. They can't Raise you but they can get you Reincarnated. You come back as a black bear. What would you do?
This would be a NPC and my first instinct is to make him a Barbarian. But that almost seems too obvious. Anyone have any thoughts?
Oddly, I just discovered that there is no black bear listing in the PFRD.
I'd start taking levels in Druid. He's already an Adept so why not?
In a word?
Panserbjorn.

If it's an NPC why not just let it be a bear?
Especially at 4th level. I mean just give him extra HD if you have to. But he's a freaking BEAR. I don't see the need to give him class levels especially if he was just a 4th level adept. (Which is a pretty sucky spellcasting class anyway.)
Add your Bear HD to Adept HD, take Natural Spell* with your new feat, and keep being an adept (will be awhile until you see a new level, since your ECL is now ridiculous). Maybe go off and get bitten by a werebear and see if the transformation runs both ways.
*yes alright technically he needs wild shape...but he's a bear!
Or he can just be a bear. :P
I'd just keep him as an adept and let him cast spells as is given that bear is now his natural form.
I wouldn't care much about the class makeup. However, now that he's a bear, I would definitely start looking into ways to add cybernetics.

Of course, cybernetics! He was a gnome, perhaps the other gnomes can help with this.
And naturally, flight and eye lasers are the other obvious improvements that all bears should have.
My first instinct would be to trade his adept levels for Druid levels and start anew from there.
A bear's skull can stop the average bullet. The average bullet doesn't do much against the average bear's hide, either.
A brown bear can go 40 mph; a black bear can likely go faster.
Bears can knock your head off with casual strength.
He can be a bear. That's all he needs.

Frickking lasers man!
Narf,
Thank you and again what I've been saying.
Or like.. a talking bear.
Is this all just theoretical or is this from a real game?
Talking bear is fine, it's just an npc after all. It doesn't all have to match some kind of mathematical model of the universe.

I'm going to be running a solo game for my wife. She will be playing an Oakling (think junior treant) Ranger. The Gnome Adept is going to be her sidekick.

Well I have had a couple of nearly fatal bear-related ranger encounters (at 3rd level or so), caused by underestimating what bears could do ("what? I didn't know they had a 40ft speed, they look so slow..." and "oh, they can climb..."). Evidently I should learn my lesson...

Remember: Any bear you can see with your unaided eye, is close enough to chase down, kill and eat you.

Some ranger...
The first thing I would do is shit someplace besides the woods. I mean, everyone expects that.
So far I think this is the best thread I've seen on these boards in some time.
Especially the comedic aspects. :)
The question is what the fuck are you playing a Gnome for in the first place. You can hide and pretend to be a black bear all you like, but in your soul you are still full of gnomish evil.

People might trust the bear, unlike the gnome in its native shape.
Cole makes a good point.

The Fez might hint at its gnomish nature. A dangerous risk, or merely a smug, cruel taunt?

It's a magical fez. He's not going to just leave it behind now that he's a bear...

What, it's the One Fez?
I would just keep him as a bear and have it rise in Hit Dice as the character companion rises in levels.
Have a small dark skinned boy and a black leopard show up asking where he's been... ;)
I was thinking more of some human ranger in a green outfit come along and say "Stop stealing picnic baskets!"
Quote from: Cole;412647What, it's the One Fez?
We don't know yet - all we know is that the bear is invisible while wearing it. If the bear is ever set on fire, we might see runes indicating that the fez is something more, but until that happens...

Build a Gnome a fire, he's warm for one night. Set a gnome on fire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

They're "picinick baskets". Pronunciation is key.
Narf,
My apologies then. :p :)

Good. And see you don't do such a dithpickable thing again! :D
