Title: OSR Star Wars?
Post by: RPGPundit on December 29, 2015, 10:48:03 PM
Which OSR rulebook (presumably sci-fi, but maybe not?) would you use to run a Star Wars campaign?

I haven't read White Star (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/148169/White-Star-White-Box-Science-Fiction-Roleplaying-Swords--Wizardry?term=White+star) yet but it looks like just the thing.

White Star or Stars Without Number. I'd be making modifications either way, but either of those would work well. I haven't gotten around to reading White Star yet, but everything I've seen so far makes me think it would probably be the best fit. SWN gives me more to work with, though, and that's a big positive.

MiniSix or D6 Space, but I would really run 1e D6 SW with some MiniSix dice streamlining.

I used to just hack BX to do that sort of thing. These days I'd probably do the same with Eidolons and Exemplars to give Jedi a bit more punch.

Just good old WEG d6 Star Wars... it's OSR enough for me.

Welcome aboard!

Same.  It's the only old-school experience I need.  Flaws and all.

Is Traveller OSR?

If so, then Traveller.

Yes, the technical aspects aren't as loose as in Star Wars, but it's still free-wheeling space opera and the Psionics system is fine to run the Force effects.

I think people forget that the original Traveller came out the same year as the original Star Wars movie, and I think much of the success of the former was down to gamers using it to do Star Wars. At least in their own minds.

For me, White Star hits this, nearly as written. I'd likely run it using White Hack.

Tangent, but I just flashed on Arrows of Indra via Star Wars lens.

d6 Star Wars RPG Revised, Expanded, and Updated

An OSR game from when OSR meant more than advertising jargon for D&D clone.

The old d6 Star Wars from West End Games would be my first choice. It's simply the best SW game I've ever tried.  If you limit it to recently published OSR games, I'd probably go with White Star.

I have read White Star, and I'm pretty sure it's what I'm going to use the next time I run a Star Wars game. I *might* mash it up with some things from Stars Without Number, bit it's really fine as it is.

I'm curious why the OP was asking for an OSR game rather than an actual old school game. There are some old school systems that work great so you don't really need to look for something newfangled that seems old.

The WEG d6 Star Wars would probably get my vote, although I ran a great OD&D Star Wars in '77 or '78 and it worked just fine. Aliens are easy to stat out and I just used Clerics as Jedi with a few spell tweaks.

There's Star Wars Galactic Adventures (http://wizardawn.and-mag.com/game_swga.php), which seems to be exactly that.

Traveller.

With my LBBs.

I'd use d6 Star Wars since I have that, or Mini-6 if I didn't have SW-d6.
I would not use any d20 class & level game; OSR or not. I bought WoTC's first d20 Star Wars and that was so bad it put me off the whole idea.

Add me to the list of WEG D6 Star Wars, any edition over anything else.

If the choice included newer games I would probably go with RQ6.

Wasn't there a link to a d6 Star Wars fan project?

Forgot about that one, it is really quite sweet!

Traveller or WEG Star Wars.

Traveller you obviously have to much about with the actual space/spaceship mechanics to get a SW feel (although if you just say that transit time and refueling was hand-waved in the movies, I guess they can work the same).

WEG SW is simple, elegant, and of course comes with Star Wars built in. It's also pre-prequels, so the feel is much more orig. trilogy. The game does have some trouble navigating character development (once you get "high-level" it's really hard to challenge you), but that's almost OSR in and of itself. :-P

Yes, it is a revised and updated version of d6 Star Wars done by some guys who post over at the Rancor Pit.

Absolutely!

Traveller was our Star Wars system until the D6 WEG game arrived.

Interesting!

Has anyone played this???

Thank you so much.  I always thought the d6 was better than the Fantasy Flight version.  Mainly I don't like the custom dice.

Go for the gold standard, WEG d6 Star Wars (SW:REUP for those dedicated to optional material and customization; the art's nice too,). System gets you in and then out of the way for playing. Best bang for your buck without poring over the system with a fine tooth comb; great for introducing to new RPG players.

Yes, played a campaign of this back in 1978-80 using a hacked copy of the D&D rules. We modified the magic and called it tech... hello +5 Vorpal Blade, I mean... Light Saber. We added stuff to the lbb psionics rules to accommodate classical Star Wars Jedi who were, ...back then, obviously Rebel Fighters, not some Ewok Loving, left-wing, peace loving, Bantha Fodder.

I remember playing SW after Empire, but before RotJ. We had 2 movies, the Marvel comics and a couple of novels. It was very interesting to see people's interpretation of stuff because we had so little canon and non-canon compared to the explosion that occurred after the WEG came out.

With respect for OSR engines, why would you use a D&D rules set for Star Wars? Star Wars Re Up seems to be just the thing. Star Wars D20 brought too many D&Disms into Star Wars, and a D&D based OSR rules set would seem to do the same thing. D6 Star Wars, instead, is designed for Star Wars.

There has been criticism of REUP being too crunchy and in fact the head of the REUP  team (klhaviation) is currently making a SW d6 1e clone by cleaning up a few things.  He has been posting some of his thoughts here:

http://www.rancorpit.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=40&sid=fdd89352536219a0e28cb030a1859845

Minisix also has a 1 page SWish setting.  Using MiniSix's dice optimizations in standard D6 SW is also a good idea, it saves from too much rolling.
