Title: OSR: Interesting Treasure Tables?
Post by: RPGPundit on June 17, 2013, 08:39:23 PM
I'm looking for info about osr-game treasure tables, ones that are variant, ideally in interesting ways, from the standard ones from the various D&D editions.  Either stuff found in products, or free ones available wherever...

Anyone got something to share?

Well, here are the two pages (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4qCWY8UnLrcVTdsRVZjcFlxazQ/edit?usp=sharing) on it I put into Spears of the Dawn, to try to give a bit more local flavor to the typical loot trove- and also because I could never keep treasure type codes straight in my head.

Dragon magazine had a GREAT "common items" "treasure" table that we used the Hell out of...

...and it actually worked out at times (like someone finding a jar of marbles that they later used to trip up a pursuing enemy).

Damned if I know the issue number, though.

I had some interesting items found in DD1, and ... I think we did an "interesting treasures" list for a module by Stuart Marshall (although it may have been just "interesting junk").

If only there was a community of like-minded people who could contribute to such a table, perhaps in the form of an electronic message sharing system...

:D

Someone was floating an idea not too long ago where the treasure types, indicated by letters of the alphabet, represented categories of valuable objects, like F = Furniture or B = Books. So monster listings would include a code like FHPXX that would describe what kinds of items would be included in the treasure.

Of course, the problem was that someone would have to write up a list of codes for existing monsters, so I haven't seen anything more about that. Anyways, I believe the idea was written up in a Fight On! article. It was also posted to the ODD74 forums.

Huh- I thought I sent one out in the last batch, but now I see that it was a month too early for that. I've just sent out one that ought to get there eventually, barring postal malfeasance.

Ironically the best one I seen for any classic D&D game is GURPS Dungeon Fantasy 7: Treasure Table (http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=SJG37-0313) For example I generated a magic spike that produced a shower of damaging sparks in a radius around the person striking it with a hammer with the spike against a hard surface. Just use $20 = 1 gp as a conversion of value.

Kellri's Encounter Reference (http://kellri.truculent.org/CDD%234%20-%20ENCOUNTERS%20Reference.pdf) has a excellent section on Treasure generation.

Looking through DragonDex (http://www.aeolia.net/dragondex/)and my own copies of Dragon... I think I might have found it, but it was a bag of marbles in the charts. Trifling Treasures, issue #207. Nice find, I might have to make use of this.

I'm very proud of the treasure tables in Hulks and Horrors, and it's pay what you want along with Heaven's Shadow on DTRPG right now. (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/115686/Bedroom-Wall-Two-Pack---Pay-What-You-Want)

Drums of War (http://drumsofwar.wikia.com/wiki/Drums_of_War_Wiki) has some treasure tables I am also very proud of, but the stat model in that system is far different from normal D&D so I'm not sure the resultant gear would be all that useful, though you could adapt the Diablo/Warcraft style naming tools to different results possibly, or tone down the numbers. It's also free, so it's worth taking a look for ideas at least.

The Hack & Slash "Treasure" document is a great guide to creating interesting treasure.  It has more tables and information so takes a bit longer, but the detail is a great cue for the imagination.

This is the non-coin part of a pick pockets article I put together for my upcoming Kickstarter release the Guidebook to the City of Dolmvay. It's not technically a treasure table so I'm not sure it's what you're looking for.
