On the overapplication of the term "furry".

Once created a character for a story that never got finished. Janice Wain's parents were a bit strange. Janice's mom decided she wanted a child, but she also wanted a cat. Dad decided to kill two birds with one stone, and had no trouble talking mom into it. As a result Janice was a human with feline features.

Fur, a tail, cat's ears, the whole thing. Behavior was also feline to an extraordinary extent. Unfortunately mom and dad decided they'd done something immoral by making Janice this way, so they abused her physically, emotionally, and mentally until the age of ten, when the authorities placed her in a foster home. From there she was adopted and lived as normal a life as one can given her previous experience.

When we first meet Janice she is sexually addicted, an obligate nudist, and a xenobiologist sent to another world to study the sophonts there. During the course of the tale she starts treatment for the addiction to sex.

"furry fandom" was originally a loose term for anyone who enjoyed comics about anthropomorphic animals; ie. TMNT (back when it wasn't a kid's comic), Usagi Yojimbo, Albedo, Cerebus, etc etc.

Now, it is an object lesson in what happens when you allow a small group of fanatics to take control of and utterly destroy a hobby. Furries are well-worthy of being despised these days, but its more useful to think of them as a warning: roleplaying will end up that way too, if we let the Swine and the Lawncrappers have their way.

I have a little story.

In and after high school, I had read a couple of Brian Jacques' Redwall books as well as played the TMNT rpg (particularly After the Bomb, and most specifically the pseudo-fantasy British Isles supplement). So I decided to create my own fantasy world with nothing but anthopomorphic animals. I had the whole thing worked out, from how and why they had become the way they were, societies, cultures, even a storyline for a campaign. We played through one game and everyone seemed to like it. Probably the coolest thing was essentially mages to use a highly addictive and dangerous drug to be able to work magic (I basically made "magic" into a limited resource, like gold or steel).

Then a friend of mine and I, somewhere in the mid-90s, saw some "furry art." I looked back at the Albedo rpg, which I had used along with bits and pieces of TMNT, for the game and saw parallels between the two art styles. We started to notice the "furries" around us, either in gaming circles, at clubs, online, etc.

We shelved the campaign and never looked back. It was that bad.

I can't even mention that setting without someone assuming I'm a "furry" and judging me one way or the other. I've even had "furries" tell me how I did it "wrong" when I've explained it. The sad thing is that according to the players it was a really cool game world. I even did a GURPS version that included humans and made the animal races "analogs" (i.e., instead of having skunks, badgers, ferrets, and raccoons I had one race that was vaguely similar to all of them, with ethnicities that more closely resembled one or the other).

So, yes, the "furries" - in this context I mean the ones that like the art with the penises and the breasts spraying milk and shit - ruined this sort of thing for me. I'd hesitate running Traveller with Vargr and Aslan. I have a family and a job to think about!

I feel your pain, Wil.  I was a big fan of the original TMNT comic (and of course, the brilliant RPG by Erick Wujcik!), and generally dug furry fandom; until it very quickly got taken over by their very own lawncrappers.  Now the whole scene is toxic, and you can't touch the stuff from risk of being even associated with those weird fuckers...

Hm... I still enjoy things like TMNT or Usagi Yojimbo. Hell, I bought a really cool foxtail at GenCon. Do I consider myself a furry? No. Do I care if anyone else considers me a furry? No.

Same here. I know I'm not a furry, so why should I be upset if someone thought I was? It's like if someone thought I was gay, or liked pot. I'd just laugh and correct them. Just a stupid misunderstanding or something.

I actually don't care either, but I am serious about the "fandom" souring my setting for me. Really, I would probably run it amongst friends but I would never, for example, put it on a website for fear of the email I would receive.
