Title: OK, so you got Lion & Dragon... now What?
Post by: RPGPundit on February 09, 2018, 11:21:28 PM
Let's say you're the proud owner of Lion & Dragon (https://www.rpgnow.com/product/226022/), the best new OSR Medieval-Authentic RPG that's causing a revolution of medievalism in the old-school gaming world.  I mean, of course you would! It's already a Silver Bestseller and is on its 3rd month of being on RPGnow's top-10 bestseller list!

And you've read the book, love it, and already have a game planned. But if there's one thing I know about old-school gamers, is that they love additional material and support.  I generally make games as single-book products and that's it. I had tons of people asking if Lords of Olympus (http://www.pigames.net/store/product_info.php?products_id=723) or Arrows of Indra (http://www.bedrockgames.net/about.html) would ever get supplements. And hey, never say never but it looks unlikely.

But I've sure smartened up since then.  Lion & Dragon already had supplements ready for it when the book came out. And now it's got more than ever, and there's still more coming! So here's a breakdown of what's available now, and what you should get if you want MORE than just the L&D rulebook:

1. Dark Albion (http://www.dcrouzet.net/heroes-witchery/?page_id=206)

The most obvious choice is this awesome huge Medieval-Authentic setting. If you liked L&D, odds are very high you'll like Dark Albion. Note, maybe 15-20% of the stuff in the L&D book is in Albion too, but the other parts are well worth the additional material. You get rules on domain management and mass warfare, more details on law and justice, a gazetteer of the lands of Albion (fantasy authentic-medieval England), complete details on the Rose War, and much more. Click the link above to get information about how to get it in hardback (original or alternate cover), paperback, or PDF.

2. Cults of Chaos (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/187942/Dark-Albion-Cults-of-Chaos)

Cults of Chaos is another obvious choice for Lion & Dragon players! In this sourcebook you'll get the most detailed set of rules and random tables to generate evil cults, sects, heresies, occult frauds and other sinister groups of Chaos. The generation system is set up to work along the lines of social class, and no two cults will ever be alike!  There's also rules on chaos mutation, lots of additional material on cults including details on several of the major cults or heresies through history, and an appendix with more material about the Elves. This book is practically an adventure-making machine since cults come with motivations and complications. If you're not interested in the Albion setting and you only get one book for L&D, this is the one! Available in softcover or PDF!

3. The Child Eaters (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/225294/RPGPundit-Presents-5-The-Child-Eaters)

This is a 9 page adventure scenario supplement is about a witch-cult and the danger it represents to a border area. It's a great introductory adventure. Available on PDF for just $1.99

4. Three Medieval-Authentic Grimoires (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/226969/RPGPundit-Presents-8-3-MedievalAuthentic-Magical-Grimoires)

5. The Book of the Art of Hours  (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/227567/RPGPundit-Presents-9-The-Book-of-the-Art-of-Hours)

6. Two More Medieval-Authentic Grimoires (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/229243/RPGPundit-Presents-12-2-More-MedievalAuthentic-Grimoires)

7. Advanced Medieval-Authentic Astrology (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/233390/RPGPundit-Presents-18-Advanced-MedievalAuthentic-Astrology)

These four books will expand the magic system for you, expanding the possibilities of what medieval-authentic magic can do! They're all short supplements, some of them as cheap as 99 cents!

8. The Secret Order of the Red Lady (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/230839/RPGPundit-Presents-14-The-Secret-Order-of-the-Red-Lady)

Another adventure-scenario for L&D, this 12-page module details a sinister aristocratic cult with a strange secret!

9. The Hunters (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/232680/RPGPundit-Presents-17-The-Hunters)

One more adventure, this one features a group of famous heroes and monster hunters. But could they actually be involved with the mysterious disappearance of several children near their manor?

And all that's just what we have for now! In a future post I'll have to remember to let you know a bit about the L&D products that will be coming out in the near future.

Finally, you're going to want somewhere to talk about L&D.  You can do that on theRPGsite if you did forums (you can also talk about all kinds of other RPGs). It's also where I'll gladly answer any of your questions about the game.

If you'd rather chat on G+, you can find lots of interesting Dark Albion and Lion & Dragon discussion  (https://plus.google.com/communities/115407678579609744010)in the Community of the same name!

So, that's it for today! Spread the good word about Lion & Dragon and all the support it's already got.

Count me as someone more interested in Arrows of Indra stuff.

I mean, European history is pretty much old hat for people in the West. But Indian? Unless you were a hippie, probably not.

These blatant advertisements are getting sorta old, Pundie. There is a forum for that, you know.

Now I actually want to buy Lion and Dragon as soon as I get paid again. It does look good, I must admit.

I highly recommend Cults of Chaos; it is a juicy supplement with tons of gameable stuff.

I have a question and this thread seems as good a place as any. As a big honking fan of Dark Albion and its supplements...what is there about Lion & Dragon I *need* to have, bearing in mind I don't have much use for another original fantasy system in these dark days of the Last Age of Man.

Good question!
So, if you're not planning to use the whole system, there's still material in Lion & Dragon that would be potentially useful for you. You have the medieval-authentic magic which you might want to use in part or in full with whatever game you're running. This includes things like magical cures, astrological talismans, and alchemical/magic recipes - all of which, if you didn't want to use as spells, you could use as new magic items.

There's also the section on treasure which has a variety of luxury items, the section on magic items which has dozens of medieval-authentic magical artifacts with stories behind them, monsters (based on medieval-authentic folklore), a set of random tables and guidelines for creating adventure locales in the wilderlands/frontiers, and a mechanical system for resolving trials (which is of course based on the law code established in Dark Albion).

Those are the ones I can think of just now.

That'll do nicely, thank you. Sold on Lion & Dragon!

They are a little annoying true, yet it's what anyone that wants a product successful needs to do imo. Push and promote. Not to mention it's his forum he can do what the hell he wants. No one is forced to respond let alone read every comment.

Tentatively agree that one needs to be aggressive in the self-promotion -- although this board alone I've seen the downside of someone going overboard with that (and Zweihander was positively toxic even before the impersonation thing). However, if not this, what is the promotions sub-forum for?

And he doesn't call his customers Nazis. That's a plus these days.

It's not a Monday unless one takes a potshot at Pundit is it.

I agree too much self promotion can be toxic and annoying. Yet its better than some say like Exile Game Studios who do no self promotion.

Don't knock it. If there wasn't a subtle subtext that maybe no one really respects Pundey around here, the place would feel entirely too much like a house organ, and then him promoting his own material would be positively expected, but also nearly useless.

Well, I'll call it the one perk of being the owner of the forum. It's not like I'm forcing anyone to read it.

Also, I've always been pretty generous with regular posters writing about their own games on here.

I find this all very entertaining. A reflection(some need to look into their mirrors)of what is going on in the world at large.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!! L&D good stuff. Scary for some...Can't wait to see what your next project will be.

Well, not only am I very glad I bought L&D, but I was wrong about the system-specific stuff. I'll be houseruling a few things into my D&D game after reading that. So glad I have the book on the way as it's going to be even more useful than Dark Albion (not to mention easier to carry).

Also, kudos for being the first ever D&D-based game that my wife's glanced at over my shoulder and expressed an interest in playing. She's done a lot of gaming over the years, but D&D has never ever appealed to her before (even the Warcraft d20 version, and she's WOW daft).

Well, my 'next project' is happening right now: RPGPundit Presents (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/32/Precis-Intermedia/subcategory/126_28809/RPGPundit-Presents), where I release one short (cheap!) OSR supplement per week. Half of them are focused on "medieval authentic" OSR play, which are default supplements for Lion & Dragon (though you can also use them in most other OSR games).  The other half are "Gonzo", and usable in any OSR game but inspired by my epic Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy DCC campaign, "Last Sun".
