Quote from: jeff37923;1098963If only someone who worked at a game store could get that same accuracy with a new game being premiered! At GenCon! You know, the "Best Four Days In Gaming". It is no wonder that the FLGS is going the way of the dinosaur.

EDIT: I'm going off right now because we just had a thread here asking if GenCon was relevant and from the photos you are showing us (plus the commentary), it isn't. At least not for gaming anymore.

Well, except for WotC who want all the moneys when they do a con, all the RPG publishers who can afford it, go.

Sure, RPGers have a huge crossover with all other forms of Geek-Chic and so tons of other people are there too.

There's one truism about RPG cons(or any gaming con):  The bigger they become, the less they become about gaming, and the more they become about the "Geek Chic Lifestyle".  Everything is branded, everyone is flying their particular Identity Flag, etc.

All that having been said, I'm sure a lot of people got in a lot of great gaming.  Not only in the event spaces, but in all the hotels, restaurants, bars and everyplace else throughout the city.

A big con is like any big city really.  Go where all the money shines, it's a soulless corporate hellhole.  Go off the beaten track, it's amazing, because there's people from all over the world to talk to.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

THIS is very true.

It's why some cons refuse to grow. They want to maintain a certain feel and focus and growing would dilute that.

Cons who do grow to the 5k+ range certainly cross-over into "Lifestyle" cons, and the con organizers focus on maximizing attendance which translates to dilution and segmentation.
