Title: Gen Con 2019, Photos, Koltar's Pictures this year
Post by: Koltar on August 08, 2019, 05:38:49 PM
Hello Folks,

Here is my thread of pictures I took at Gen Con 2019.
This year I roomed with at least 3 other people at first one Hotel , then a second one. Also had bothersome knee pain - more than usual because of a stairway fall back in June. I still toughed it out and wore my Klingon Outfit on Friday and did the Steampunk look

Here are the pictures...

2019, AUG 01 0940 Thu 001   The 'Welcome Gen Con' banners on the street. I took this from the skywalk near the Hyatt

Sign of Gen Con Shirts, and yes lots of people were wearing that LGBTQ Rainbow shirt...

Yes, Carmen Sandiego is back. This young woman is a friend. For the past five years she goes around Gen Con doing a geography picture quiz. When she shows you a picture of a place and you correctly guess 'where' it is she give you a button that says "I found Carmen Sandiego at Gen Con 2019". All the photos are pictures she actually took from her vacations over the years.

The Will Call Line. I asked their permission to take the picture. Consent is very important at Gen Con

That is Steve Jackson posing with me. He complimented my outfit, I had to remind that he used to see me in a Klingon uniform and makeup years ago.

You work in a game store and you still cannot bother to read the large letters that say "Cyberpunk" on the banner even though you think it is really Cool?!

Oh look Jeff made a petty comment about a typo.

My notes said 'cyberpunk or Shadowrun'. The pictures while trying to upload them look smaller than thumbnails.
You could have just said something in a private message

Also sweat was running into my eyes that day when I took the picture. I just saw a Really Cool poster - wasn't looking for an argument or nitpick - apparently others are.

It IS a really cool poster for Shadowrun.

The imagery looks easily like Shadowrun art and the Cyberpunk name is off to the side and feels minimized.

Koltar, please keep posting pics!

Also, how do you not melt down into a sweat puddle in your Klingon gear?

You kind of get used to it. Most years I can tough it out for at least 4 to 7 hours.
Last year a lot of people loved the return of the Klingon look after maybe 10 years.
There is a trick to deflect sweat off of one's face using a certain feminine hygiene product if it is trimmed and put strategically underneath the fake forehead - this year I forgot to buy that ahead of time.
Next year I will plan that out better.

The first Carmen in the pictures is not 'some cosplayer chick' - I would never refer to her that way.
She is a friend that I have known for years.

If only someone who worked at a game store could get that same accuracy with a new game being premiered! At GenCon! You know, the "Best Four Days In Gaming". It is no wonder that the FLGS is going the way of the dinosaur.

EDIT: I'm going off right now because we just had a thread here asking if GenCon was relevant (https://www.therpgsite.com/showthread.php?40958-Is-GenCon-Relevant) and from the photos you are showing us (plus the commentary), it isn't. At least not for gaming anymore.

I can read it just fine, but I'm talking about the initial visual impact.

But maybe THAT brand confusion was the plan. Maybe since CP has been out of the market and Shadowrun is a mega-player, their plan was to visually piggyback on the Shadowrun imagery to get people interested once they saw the Cyberpunk wording.

AKA, if I use Elmore style art (or actual Elmore art) to pimp my fantasy RPG, then I'm obviously tapping into the Forgotten Realms branding.

The "tampon under the hat" is an old theater trick!

I learned it from an F/X guy who did haunted houses.

Like many theater tricks, its under the "if it works, use it!" rule.

Um, Shadowrun is a fantasy/cyberpunk mashup. So if they were going to claim that it was Shadowrun, then where are the fantasy races that are on almost every Shadowrun cover?

The artist who did that piece and the covers for the Cyperpunk Red Jumpstart Kit is named Anselm Zielonka, his ArtStation site is here.
(https://www.artstation.com/alonka) He has never worked on Shadowrun.

So when Elmore did the cover art for Star Frontiers and the black & white interior art for Traveller 4, those were obvious attempts to tap into the Forgotten Realms branding?
I want whatever it is you've been smoking!

I agree here. Elmore also did the cover art for Cyberpunk.

I disagree that the photos mean the con is irrelevant to gaming. We tend to take pics of interesting stuff. People sitting at a table playing RPGs tends not to be very interesting. And back before digital you had limited camera film to snap stuff. My old con photo album is full of odds-n-ends that just caught my interest at a moment had the camera ready.

My old GenCon vhs camcorder vids though were one looooooooooooong tour of the place, dealers area, various gaming rooms and displays, seminar rooms and people playing as passed by till ran out of steam.

Bolding mine, because it shows the core of the problem. Pictures of gamers may not look interesting enough, so people take pics of everything else. The people who look at those pics notice everything else except for the gaming, so when more people are attracted to the cons by the pics - they are being attracted to everything else. A convention that originated around gaming now has gaming as second place (if not third or fourth) to the eye candy. This snowballs until the con doesn't focus on gaming as much as it is diluted by everything else.

Didn't you see the murder gnomes hiding in the lower left corner? I thought you had good vision!

I am talking INITIAL + VISUAL + IMPACT of the CP art, not that CP is trying to duplicate SR. Just grab eyeballs of their fans.

AKA, if I want to sell a game to D&D fans, putting a Dungeon / Dragon / Elf with Bow / Dwarf with Axe / Sorceress Chick on the cover of my product causes an Initial Visual Impact on those fans.

Yes it was! Because glossy color covers and b/w interiors are the exact same thing!!!

:p

I'm surprised the video game companies haven't descended upon GenCon like how Hollywood devoured ComicCon.

Whenever people tell me they're going to ComicCon, I ask them what comic books they're getting there and I love the confused looks on their faces.

Oooh, a cosplay con! :p I keed, I keeed! :D

But honestly though, I dig gameplay photos too. And not just of wargame minis either. I like snaps of CCG game states where I can piece out what's going on. I like pics of RPG sprawls of books, notes, tables, doodles, props, etc. I sometimes like boardgame shots, but often it doesn't interest me unless the game state is remarkable. :)

But costumes and strangers are nice too. :D

1: Fucks sake now Koltar has ME doing it! Thanks for pointing that out. doh. I meant 1st ed Shadowrun.

2: If you look around you'll find those too. Probably lots over at BGG. But when I was doing gaming cons alot I had limited camera space and tended to snap stuff that looked interesting.

The other reason I have so few gameplay photos is... I hate interrupting people with "Hey? Can I photo that?" Though I have now and then if I had the camera ready and it looked like a pause. I actually never got a chance to photo a single session of Dragon Storm. Or video any. To me it feels a little tacky. Others are perfectly fine. But that was back in the bygone days of flash bulbs.

Now-a-days I'd more likely try and get gameplay photos with the phone as its less intrusive, and blinding. ahem.

It's good to see All's Quiet On the Martian Front getting some love anyhow.  The Alien Dungeon kickstarter debacle just about killed the game, though, oddly enough it let me clear out most of my stock.  I think the game itself had one major issue.  The starter set armies don't give the humans much of a chance.  You really need the weird desperate stuff, anti tripod guns and forlorn hope teams to stand a chance.

Thanks for the cool photos once again Koltar.

If you ever meet him in person I dare you to ask him about that photo chart he has of Twenty sided dice stacked up against each other. You likely will hear him go into a shpiel about how Game Science dice are better than all of the other dice and how he makes them. His style is a mix of P.T Barnum. W.C. Koltar, what did you play at GenCon? Any GURPS?

What did you pick up for yourself?

What do you feel were the "success stories" among the new products?

Multiply those two by 50. Im sure you would complain that they all look too similar and boring.

For freaks sake you are just looking for a fight with him and/or to tear down the convention aren't you?

Yeah, I'm pretty salty about a business that incorporated to provide "The best four days in gaming" and instead dabbles in local politics, supports the perpetrator when a guest is attacked, and by the visual proof of that comes from a veteran FLGS worker who can't tell the difference between two games advertisement banner even when the name is printed on the banner that the con is a place for cosplayers more than TTRPG players.

Yet you are right. I should shut the fuck up about it.

Quote from: jeff37923;1098963If only someone who worked at a game store could get that same accuracy with a new game being premiered!

Well, except for WotC who want all the moneys when they do a con, all the RPG publishers who can afford it, go.

Sure, RPGers have a huge crossover with all other forms of Geek-Chic and so tons of other people are there too.

There's one truism about RPG cons(or any gaming con):  The bigger they become, the less they become about gaming, and the more they become about the "Geek Chic Lifestyle".  Everything is branded, everyone is flying their particular Identity Flag, etc.

All that having been said, I'm sure a lot of people got in a lot of great gaming.  Not only in the event spaces, but in all the hotels, restaurants, bars and everyplace else throughout the city.

A big con is like any big city really.  Go where all the money shines, it's a soulless corporate hellhole.  Go off the beaten track, it's amazing, because there's people from all over the world to talk to.

THIS is very true.

It's why some cons refuse to grow. They want to maintain a certain feel and focus and growing would dilute that.

Cons who do grow to the 5k+ range certainly cross-over into "Lifestyle" cons, and the con organizers focus on maximizing attendance which translates to dilution and segmentation.
