Title: Music to rock your OSR to.
Post by: Blink_Dog on March 21, 2019, 09:36:21 AM
Just going to start this thread so people can post awesome music to game to. This is my first choice, I remember when this classic came out in the 80's, when White Dwarf magazine used to be cool and did articles on D&D and other games produced by other companies.

Post your faves here.

I suppose there's more than enough monsters in OSR games to make this fitting:

Gregorian Chant is a favorite for concept whiteboarding, as are channels of random house music.

I can't listen to regular music with lyrics and do something else at the same time.  My mind trains on the lyrics.  On the other hand, chant is treated mentally as instrumental instead of lyrical.

Currently building a "Sword & Sandal meets Sword & Sorcery" OSR campaign setting and so why not go with some appropriate music?

These tunes are great for a Roman Legionnaire or Spartan Hoplite going to retrieve ancient treasures and glories, slaying wild beasts, great monsters, and the hordes of Celtic and Germanic barbarians in between.

Yup. They've been teasing on FB with pictures of the band members in costume (costume changes by song, depending on who they sing) and lyrics from the new album. The evil sorcerer escaped Dundee XIII into an alternate dimension at the end of the last album. They also have symphonic versions of the second (and it looks like third) album(s) which make great atmosphere music.

I've never been a fan of playing background music with games, but Joe Satriani wouldn't be a bad choice as it is almost entirely instrumental pieces and could work for everything from fantasy to sci-fi.

Hill of the Skull sounds like it was made as a sound track to a heroic last stand. it always makes me think of Boromir fighting the orcs at the end of Fellowship of the Ring.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tl4OB2zjzD4

Cool #9 has a kind of jazzy sound that would go well with heist plans.

Some years ago a similar thread came up over on BGG about music for use with RPG sessions.

My suggestion was to grab the BGM music files from Neverwinter Nights as they were saved as individual media files.

Yes, video game soundtracks are amazing. I have quite a few saved on my phone. Games and movies have done more to innovate and push music forward than many modern "standalone releases" that I see today. That's unless you are super into pop music, of course, and I'll admit that I'm not hater of pop music in small doses.

For instance, the first time I heard the Diablo 1 soundtrack, it basically blew my mind. I had no idea music like that even existed. Then you take something like "Skyrim", "Hotline Miami" or "Journey" (not the band, lol) and you realize that there is some great stuff out there. Another recent one is the "Mandy" soundtrack. That shit is bonkers. I shouldn't even have to mention the likes of John Williams, etc.

(I like Journey just fine, btw.)

I rarely use vocalised music anymore in my gaming, apart from the occasional battle theme. I've found the recent renaissance of the Dungeonsynth genre great for OSR gaming. It conveys the proper flair for retro fantasy.
