This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

holy mackerel, way to turn me off with the cover artwork...

http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/product_images/full_size/rqlankhmar.jpg

Now obviously, i've been around for a while and know better than to "judge a book..." etc but damn man...i seem to remember drawings very much like that in my high school History binder when i would plan for weekend badassery with my AD&D group.  that's just...BAD.

BUT WAIT!  there's also this and this.  that first pic is done by someone with some issues with perspective and/or foreshortening, and the second is so busily surreal i have no idea what the hell is going on.

jesus christ...ok, ok i'm just going to leave it alone.

Yah, those are pretty crap-tastic, especially the Lankhmar pic.

Fafhrd can't bend his arms, poor guy...

The Mongoose art for their Runequest line is just mind-blowingly crappy.

I was thinking about picking up the Lankhmar book out of interest, but I just never want to have to look at that cover again.  One less sale for Mongoose.

I don't get it.  The art for their Conan line is quite good.

I know, right?  i think i'd almost rather see public-domain woodcuts or something...ugh.

This is a shocker. The RuneQuest art that was lackluster has shaded into being flat-out bad in Lankhmar, looking like crappy fanzine art. At the least, when TSR had the license, they produced some decent artwork, especially on their Lankhmar city book.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

RPGPundit

Are we sure the author's untalented 12 year old son isn't the one making those drawings?? I mean, what the fuck were they thinking?? This makes the original GURPS 4e proposed covers a fucking work of art by comparison!

The Lankhmar cover smells of a high school art class.

The last two Glorantha covers though...wow...just...wow...I hope they sell those books with special glasses and a disclaimer that reads: "May cause epileptic seizures in the photosensitive".

Those covers look like they were in an accident with a paint truck...

Maybe they're trying to recapture the glory of the art that was in the original D&D (woodgrain/white box), with the dragon on the inside cover of one of the books looking like it was done by someone who had yet to hit the double-digits, age-wise....

I sure hope this is not a reflection of the content... but for some, it may be...

Rick Hershey

Well, I won't say too much, since mongoose is a client. But we just finished a cover for the Lankhmar line, and I promise it is better then all the ones they have been using. Of course, that's not really a hard task from what I've seen and apparently all the internet feels. Hopefully they will have it up soon and all can be joyous.

p.s.- In no way am I or my studio in anyway connected to those previous covers. . . but we did do the interior art for Glorantha, and are responsable for those graphic elements around the RQ cover.

Casey777

What seems to be the author's take on the cover. Seems it's an aberration and there's art in the book that'd have worked much better for the cover instead.

Right now I'd rather finish reading the books first and get the first White Wolf collection in hardcover to replace my paperback. Not sure if I'll ever get the RPG book as I've yet to see the need to buy a MRQ book esp. with the nice SRDs. Do want to take a look at the Glorantha 2nd age book as I may like it more than 3rd age Glorantha.
