Title: Jungle Resources, Fruits, Animals and Creatures!
Post by: SHARK on May 20, 2022, 04:17:36 PM
Greetings!

Do you have lots of different things made up for Jungle environments? It is pretty incredible the variety of different resources that--at least historically--come from Jungle environments. Wondrous woods, like Palm, Mahogany, Teak, and Bamboo. Elephant Grass! And the numerous kinds of tropical fruits--bananas, oranges, melons, and more. The varieties of nuts, too. Most nuts seem to come from tropical environments.

Then there are the bazillion kinds of fish, insects, and birds! Lots of other kinds of cool animals, too!

MONKEYS and APES!

I was reading through one of my animal books recently, and enjoyed reading about all kinds of different monkeys. Ground monkeys, tree monkeys, monkeys of different sizes, colours, and demeanors. Different social structures. Many people eat monkeys, too.

Brilliant Macaws! Lots of different coloured birds! These things make lots of noises, and often gather together in large numbers. The feathers, wow. Such colours, shading, different blends. Many traditions of native costumes, headdresses, cloaks, and other clothing using various kinds of feathers are jaw-dropping in their beauty and *wow factor*. Again, such birds are also often eaten, too.

Throw in some magical creatures and substances, and damn, all kinds of possibilities present themselves!

I've created a bunch of jungle relevant resources for my Southeast Asia during the last Ice-Age setting.

Full list of plant and animal resources:

Spices:

Edit: I also use this resource if I want to know more about the animals to be found in the area: https://www.ecologyasia.com/index.htm

I've lived in the Hawaiian jungle, and never knew before that how much noise birds can make. Not exaggerating, dawn was like listening to a jet airplane landing for an hour or so. Probably pushing 100 decibels of sheer bird noise. Magnificent and nervewracking.

That's awesome, Zalman!

Yeah, birds are crazy loud! Especially in the morning! *laughing*

No self respecting Jungle is complete without a Jungle Master.

Hey, is there anyway you can send me a PDF copy of that class? I have a place for it in my current campaign.

Thank you!

P.S. when you were copy pasting the tracking ability from rangers you missed editing a reference to rangers.

Tracking: The Jungle Master has a 1-18 on a d20 chance of successfully tracking prey (animal, human, or other) outdoors. The chance of success decreases by 2 for each day old the tracks or signs are. In order to track a prey indoors, the Ranger must have observed the prey no more than 6 turns previously. The chance of successfully tracking the prey (on a d20) depends on the action the prey takes.

I miss stuff in my Hack all the damned time. I need another set of eyes, but I "borrowed" from so many sources I don't want the thing to hit the internet.

It's just about editing, I'm planing on having you guys be my proof readers to catch stuff I missed.  ;)

The Final (maybe) version of my Jungle Master, see what you guys think of it

Thanks to Mike B from MeWe for his criticism, here are the fixes:

Jungle call fix: Once per day per level.

Languages: You speak a type of pidging common to the tribes from your jungle, you have a very basic grasp of spoken English (or common) {I Zaan, you Laura} and no reading/writing skills. Given enough time and training you might learn to write/read and to speak more normally. Other languages depend on your INT score but you are always at a -1 until you perfect your first "civilized" language.

Why are some skills done with a d6 and others with a d20? Are skills all roll low? And then roll high for combat?

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but many are into the whole one die mechanic to rule them all schtick and you might put them off your game.

Jungle Skills are the equivalent of thievery for the White Box Thief, so I made them d6, Bushcraft is aking to something the Ranger has, so I made it d20. Yes, all skills are roll under and then roll high for combat.

I think it's easy enough to modify to taste that you should have no problem houseruling it.

Okay, besides adding art at some time in the future, the Jungle Master is done (Link below). Now to work on The Jungle Legend Class (Totally not the Ghost Who Walks)  ;)

According to Kefra, one of my old players from Africa, the jungle is also an insanely lethal environment even when you know what to do.

In South America theres some sort of fungus that eats away at you frighteningly fast. I've seen accounts from two people who found that out the hard way. And that is before you even get to the things that are poison, or the animals, or the land and weather itself which can be really harsh.

Dragon Storm pretty much summed it up. Pristine lands literally caused you damage every day you stayed in them.
