Title: Jackals RPG...Bronze age Sword and Sorcery
Post by: oggsmash on July 02, 2021, 03:51:33 PM
I grabbed this book on a whim, and did not expect much.  Now I am conflicted, as I thought to grab it to get a few ideas for a Sword and Sorcery campaign, but this game looks very good to actually use (I was planning to use Mythras) in and of itself.

The clashes in the combat system I like the idea a lot, but I do wonder how they play at the table, and I was curious if anyone here as any experience playing this game and how the flow of action goes.   I could see where once you get a certain number of players at the table, it could slow things down, but that is just perception from reading rather than practical experience.

Drop a link? Clashes sounds intriguing.

Just the other day I was browsing around to the Mythras site to download their starter rules and get a sense of how their system works.

Here is the Osprey page for Jackals -

https://ospreypublishing.com/jackals (https://ospreypublishing.com/jackals)

They also have a campaign book out, link at the bottom of that page...

I gather YouTube has some video reviews and actual play if you search for them

Also the basic role playing org site has a lengthy thread covering a lot of stuff including some errata and clarifications

Saw this at a local game store in Cardiff earlier this week. Interested in hearing folks experience with the system. I've read a bit of "openquest" what's different about it?
Authors background in the subject seems interesting (studying ancient "biblical" languages).

There seem to be similarities to Mythras with regard to some of the effects and back and forth nature of combat both systems represent.  Both systems seem very, very good for sword and sorcery.  I like GURPS alot, and it does Sword and Sorcery very well, but it does take some work regarding the magic system and converting adventures.  It seems Jackals has done well enough they already have a campaign book out (and from what I have seen Osprey usually is a one hit and quit on RPGs) and maybe it will get the rpg treatment they gave their skirmish game Frostgrave, with lots of support and supplements.
