Not quite this.
I do remember back in college some geek type freshman students pledging for a frat, ended up doing stuff like punching out a junior or senior frat member, for suggesting all kinds of weird ridiculous or humiliating stuff. It was sort of amusing at the time, watching two "high functioning" autistic or borderline geek types, physically beating the shit out of one another.
I don't remember the greek letters of the particular frat offhand, but IIRC it was some frat which attracted geeky types such as engineering majors.
EDIT: Never quite understood how these guys were able to party every night and play D&D for long sessions almost every day, while still managing the heavy work load which was typical of engineering majors.

As far as I know, this "ritual" is taken directly from Knights of the Dinner Table. Whether it ever happened for real or not, I don't know.

Thanks. I never was into KotDT, so I didn't get that.
BYW dude, whatever was pissing you off when you took your avatar picture, I hope it's better now.

KotD sounds like a reasonable source. If stuff like this actually happened, well... no, it must be a joke, seriously.
Yes I do it to all my new game group members.

Yeah, it's KoDT. I wouldn't be surprised if some Hackmaster groups did it. I know of at least one that does the "Hubcap of Shame".
I could see a ritual like this backfiring in some cases:
