Title: Informal poll: What determines where you play in the house?
Post by: Joethelawyer on March 06, 2010, 02:20:01 PM
Just wondering if edition or styles of play or something else influences physical location in the house.  I would prefer to play sitting in the living room with a bunch of couches and chairs, and a few end tables and coffee tables for the food and drink. My brother has a killer setup though, with a massive pool table next to a fully stocked bar with a kegrator, so we play there, and also because there is less chance of waking the kids up if we play downstairs.  If we go over another guy's house, we play on his couches and chairs in the living room, because there is no other place to play.  We play 3.0 houseruled to run like older editions, so no battlemats or minis needed, so the middle of the pool table tends to hold a hoard of food.

Do you guys find that play location in terms of living room/couches versus dining room/somewhere with chairs around a big table is edition determined?  Location determined?  Playstyle determined?  Or just by default, as in you take whatever you can get?

What do you prefer?  Living room/couches?  Or big table with chairs around it?  Does that preference change by game edition?

Are you limiting this to just D&D?
Cause we play Deadlands/Earthdawn... in the living room... at big wooden table.
We use minis and flats on a gridded battlemat.
For my BRP game we sit on the floor or on couches and sometimes use toys to loosely map locations.

"Edition"? My game of choice, which does happen to be a Distant D&D derivative, is Fantasy Craft.

Were I to play an actual game again bearing the name, it'd be D&D 3.5.

Location is normally a living room or kitchen with sufficiently large table.

My preference for gaming is sitting at a table with chairs.  It doesn't matter much to me in what room this happens, unless the room contains a cat.

Regardless of game, I tend to GM at a table.

High School: Bedroom with a card table.
College: Dining room with a dining table.
Married Life: Kitchen with a dining table.

I've played at other people's houses and used couches and used tables. Overall I prefer gaming at a table which allows a central focal point.

At a table, with chairs. I favor OD&D and First Ed at the moment.

When it comes to D&D, I'm partial to the D&D Rules Cyclopedia and/or to Castles & Crusades.

We generally play at Ye Olde Dinner Table, but I like standing up and acting the shuffling gait of a beggar, or the dying spasms of an orc.

Regardless of room or game, I've always preferred a table to game. I find that focus stays on the game better.

I have also started collecting minis and various types of maps to help map out combat situations. We don't use any real form or tactical rules; I just like to map situations. I find the visuals help everyone keep track or what is going on and it seems to help spur creativity. Since minis kind of require a real table I've taken an even stronger preference to using a real table.

As for room, any that has a table. :)

Castles & Crusades, so "other".

We play at our FLGS, but it's more of a central meeting place as much as anything.  If we build on to our house, I'd love to get a great game room going, but with the kids and the hour we play, it isn't feasible with our current setup.

We use a dedicated game room with twin fold-up tables and chairs. There is plenty of room for battle mats, minis, and of course our books, dice, snacks and character sheets. Not all of our games use minis and mats though.

We are currently playing the mixed bag that is D&D 4e. The next game is tomorrow afternoon in fact. May the dice be with us!
