Tell me your tales of Calidar (http://bruce-heard.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_7.html)!
Curious about the setting. It mentions space ships, how does that work? It is a "hodge podge" setting? Thoughts, experience and opinions please!

Hi Trech. Calidar is a medieval fantasy RPG setting that focuses on skyships able to navigate through the skies or between worlds. It is the direct heir to the
Voyages of the Princess Ark, a popular series of adventure published in Dragon Magazine in the 80s and 90s. Style-wise, it may remind you of old style D&D. Click here for the description. Mr. Heard Himself! Thanks for stopping by!
So, I've poked about your blog (very nice btw...). I was curious about some particulars. I wanted to see if anyone was using the setting in their current game.
So, the Sky Ships can travel into space?
It looks like there are an enormous amount of nations, etc. How would you describe the variety? Tons of races? Languages?
I am interested in the setting using D&D5e.

You can probably find people using the setting at the Piazza. (Click here for that). (http://www.thepiazza.org.uk/bb/viewforum.php?f=91)
Some skyships can sail into space or into other planes (not all of them--depends how they are made). Each race uses different ways to travel between worlds. Some people have made a parallel between Calidar and Spelljammer.
There is one planet that is the focus of this campaign setting -- Calidar itself. It is mostly wilderness (the Dread Lands) save for one small continent (the Great Caldera). It is akin to Mystara's known world. It features ten realms. These are former colonies of three moons. Each of the moons is controlled by an empire (Alorea is the elven empire, Kragdur is the dwarves, and Munaan the humans). Other races exist (gnomes, fellfolk/halflings, Kahuulkin--basically Martians, Caniseans--dogfolk, and Feliseans--catfolk). The style is very much like Mystara.
There are two other planets: Draconia (evil dragons), and Lao-Kwei (Calidar-China) with its own moon, Kumoshima (Calidar-Japan). Lao-Kwei is somewhat like Mars, while Draconia looks like Mercury (it is a hollow world, since the outside is uninhabitable). And then there's the Fringe, a vast asteroid field surrounding the Soltan Ephemeris (solar system), and Ghule, an artificial planetoid that contains a giant dungeon filled with millions of orcs and other humanoids. Ghule comes another universe. It shows up once in while when its alien gods awaken. When Ghule travels through the Soltan Ephemeris, the orcs go on the hunt for hundreds of thousands if not millions of slaves, which they bring back to their universe to feed their voracious gods. If there aren't enough Calidaran victims, the gods also snack on the orcs... Nasty bunch, those.
Etc. :)
Sounds like a blast! I will check out that other forum.
Being a big fan of Bruce's earlier work, I'm really looking forward to reviewing this. Unfortunately, while the maps arrived, the book has not, and I'm starting to seriously fear it has been lost in the mail...

Still? What a bummer. I'll ask DTRPG to send you another copy. Sorry about that.
It has space orcs that ride inside giant space worms.
Sadly, I haven't made the time to utilize Calidar in a game.
When you do find time, keep an eye for the second book, CC1 "Beyond the Skies." (http://bruce-heard.blogspot.com/2015/01/CC1.html) It'll be Calidar's version of "Deities and Demigods," but with a lot more meat and color.

Wow! That looks like an undertaking for sure.
I ordered the hardcover (with PDF) and the maps.
Since I didn't get a lot of response here, and it looks pretty spiffy, I'll just create a conversion for 5e and see what tales I can tell! :-)
More to follow (as I read up, fiddle around).
Still would love to hear anyone else with thoughts on the setting...

I shall have one forthwith, once I am finished reading it thoroughly of course.

I saw your orders -- thank you. DTRPG will ship the book as soon as it is printed (P.O.D.) The two poster maps are already in the mail. I dropped them at the post office yesterday morning. :)

Excellent (also, my pleasure)! So far I'm enjoying the fiction at the beginning, and I skipped forward a tad. I like the fell..something halflings! A cool tribal Polynesian feel.
The imperial nature of the Elves is an interesting twist on that race. The Ghul...something planetoid dungeon full of "orcs" that invade using space creatures is absolutely brilliant! What a great catalyst for a campaign.
I have much more to read (and absorb) but a review is forthcoming.
I grabbed a softcover the other month. It's a tasty read - I'm a fan of the inspiring material from back in the day. The maps are really nice.
Some of the conceits of the setting - the planet's world soul (which accounts for wilderness and monsters, if I recall) is a nice spin. The gods are also interesting - some nice cosmology items (how the Calidar Odin gets "created" is very interesting).

I'm the one who's sorry; it's shitty bad luck. You'd be only like the third review product ever (out of maybe hundreds) that never showed up.
Send me a PM just so we can triple check the address, if you could.

Cool!
It's been a while since I last posted here. This looks like a good opportunity to go over all that's happened since then.
CC1 "Beyond the Skies:" It is my present project. I just finished the writing part and am working on the upcoming Kickstarter event. This book is, as you might guess, the second release for my campaign world, Calidar. It details 89 gods spread out among eight pantheons (one elven, one dwarven, one fellfolk, one gnomish, one half-elven, and four human) plus one monotheistic cult. A good deal of the book focuses on outer planes, servants of the gods, divine alliances, secret societies, powers granted to the faithful based on their levels of piety, histories of the cults and therefore of their people, as well as shamans of the Dread Lands, and mechanics on how to handle the Great Caldera's "haunted" wilderness. All told, the book should exceed 250 pages, small type (akin to the presentation style of GAZ3 "Principalities of Glantri" for those of you familiar with this old series of D&D accessories.)
The Kickstarter Event: Funding is needed essentially for the cover art, internal illustrations, and final editing. It is currently projected for December 2015, ending early in January 2016. The book's final release date should be in the summer of 2016, depending on the availability of the artists I'd like to see involved in this project. This Kickstarter is crucial, since it will determine how much internal art will illustrate the various gods. Diagrams, temple floor plans, geographical maps, and godly symbols have already been secured. If you aren't familiar with Calidar, the original Kickstarter took place in 2014 -- click here for that page. (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ambreville/world-of-calidar)
New Website: Calidar Publishing now owns its own website, (http://strangerskies.com/) which gives an overview of Calidar, the game world, the product, and the first book. It includes my blog, (http://strangerskies.com/blog/) a webstore (http://strangerskies.com/get-calidar-2/), and an official forum (http://www.strangerskies.com/bbforums/index.php) which turned out to be pretty snazzy! Give us a visit and tell us what you think. You can still get your copy of CAL1 "In Stranger Skies," the first book in the series via DTRPG. (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/133973/Calidar-In-Stranger-Skies)
Other Events: I will attend Lake Geneva's Gary Con in March of 2016, as well as North Texas RPG Con in June 2016. I'm looking forward to meeting D&D Mystara and Calidar fans.
Good to hear!! Looking forward to this.
Mighty tempted to go for the book. Love me some flying ships and evocative setting.
On a scale from 1 to Errol Flynn, how much swashbuckling is in the setting?

Are you familiar at all with the
Voyage of the Princess Ark, series published in Dragon Magazine in the 80s and 90s? If you are, that should answer your question, since Calidar is, at least in spirit, an offshoot of that genre.
So, yes -- it is about swashbuckling. The Captain, Isldemer d'Alberran fights two-handed, with a rapier in one hand and a wizard's wand in the other. Certainly the first book in the series, CAL1 "
In Stranger Skies" fits in this category, as well as upcoming Gazetteer-style books for Calidar.
CC1 "
Beyond the Skies" is about Calidar's gods, the history of the cults and their people, and all the shenanigans between the world of the divine and the mortals. The difference with classical Greek gods is that those of Calidar are created by the mortals who worship them, and therefore, the pious followers do have some measure of control over their spiritual patrons... take it from there and see where that leads. :)
Never Read 'Voyage of the Princess Ark'. Is it available in bookform or online somewhere?
It sounds like Calidar might very well be something for me. Alternative world building, swashbuckler action and flying ships sound about right for what I like in a fantasy campaign. It also seems to have more of an 'age of sail' feel than the usual anachronistic fantasy medieval Europe that is many D&D worlds.

VotPA is hard to find. A big portion of the magazine's material was compiled and developed in the Champions of Mystara boxed (written for BECMI D&D game mechanics), which is now OOP and fairly expensive to obtain via eBay. Otherwise the original material is spread out over more than 25 or 30 issues of Dragon Magazine from the 80s and 90s. Calidar is/will be an alternative to VotPA, but it's going to take some time before it can exceed what was originally written. CC1 "Beyond the Skies" will certainly help achieve this goal. On the other hand, the World of Calidar itself is far more intricate and far-ranging than Mystara, which offers much greater potential.
Thanks for the info. I've gone ahead and bought the book, and am already planning how to use the setting for a campaign. I'm thinking having the players own a skyship, and keep everything open-ended, like a sandbox. Opportunities abound :D Now for writing some 5e conversion material...

So Bruce: one of the things I loved about Princess Ark was some of the more gonzo stuff; all the weird little micro-cultures that were found along the Coast. Is Calidar going to have any of that?
Any chance it'll have a wild-west area with six-shooters?

Yes, I had developed precisely this kind of a setting for Mystara's Savage Coast, as an episode for Dragon Magazine's
Voyage of the Princess Ark. It would be easy to assume or expect I'd eventually pull something of this nature in Calidar as well. If I did, it wouldn't be on Calidar itself, but in the Fringe (where pretty much anything goes).
After all, I do already have laser-toting Space Vikings plying the somber outskirts of the Soltan ephemeris for fame and booty. The Vortex is designed to enable precisely this sort of transposition, hijacking people from Earth's history or from works of fiction, and selling them to gods who'd want to establish them as their mortal followers in Calidar's universe. With this in mind, it could be perfectly justifiable to have a Wild West setting with people who learned about magic, meddling gods, and fantastic monsters --
if referees so desired.
Somewhat related are the dwarves of Calidar who could be described as steampunk Klingons with canons, arquebuses, and space-faring dreadnoughts. On the far edge of this spectrum, a game master could introduce a celluloid race of talking ducks straight out of classical toons (not that I would -- but, yeah, you could.) The merchant Republic of Osriel is also being set up as a mosaic of cultures inspired from western Europe. CC1
"Beyond the Skies" explains why and how competing gods seized abducted folks stranded in the Vortex, to create cultures in Osriel as a scheme to colonize/proselytize the region in their names. Pretty wonky I'd say, but very much in line with what I'd written for GAZ3
Principalities of Glantri thirty years ago (except now, there is a rationale for this).
So, will I introduce micro-cultures "a-la-Princess-Ark?" Certainly I will. These are most likely to be featured in adventures rather than full fledged Gazetteers, or to appear in stories written for the
Star Phoenix.

Greetings all!
I'm very excited to be able to share with you the link to Beyond the Skies' preview page. This presentation is very close to its final version, which should go live during the first week of December 2015.
This page says a lot about the new book in the Calidar series as well as the people behind it. As this still is work in progress to some degree, the link is made public mainly for the opportunity to return feedback about its contents. Have a look at the project's general description, pledge levels, add-ons, and stretch goals. Tell us what you think. You can do so here, or directly via the preview page (use the feedback box near the top of the kickstarter page).
This kickstarter makes it possible for new backers to acquire the original book at a discounted price, and other titles strictly restricted to kickstarter supporters. As always, the success of any crowd funding depends directly upon its backers. So please, do share this post as much as possible with friends you know may be interested in Calidar.
Thank you so much for making this book a reality!

That's lovely, but for a moment I thought, from the sound of your little intro blurb, that you were releasing some kind of program to make random Skyship designs.
THAT would be FUCKING AMAZING.
Edit to add: If anyone actually tries to go with this idea, I expect to be mentioned in the credits!

If you're new with Calidar, now's the time to look for yourself and get started at the best possible value.
In case you wondered, this book does offer *quite a lot of game mechanics* -- what some of you refer as crunch. A massive chapter details *a myriad powers* granted to mortal followers based on their not only on their cult but also their piety, from the casual follower to the firebrand zealot or dedicated priest of the cults. Additional powers can be granted over time based on behavior, along with short term *Divine Favors* for those who distinguish themselves. On the other hand, *Divine Wounds* await those who chose their paths most unwisely. Aside from stories and the description of gods, a host of denizens are also described which are likely to interact with your favorite party of adventurers, from a panoply of *hallowed servants* of the gods to the worst of *demon princes.* More mechanics describe Calidar's *Dread Lands,* the harvesting of seitha, and a system to run the *spirit lords* defending the world's massive wilderness from intruders. Of course, secret societies and a collection of *floor plans* for their lairs also offer as *many opportunities for adventuring* and tangling with the hidden affairs of the gods.

Thanks Kuroth. Part of me wanted to approximate the old Deities & Demigods that harked back to my early years of gaming. On the hand, I wanted to integrate in Calidar all this material about the gods in a much more constructive and useful way than Deities & Demigods ever did. By the time the smoke cleared, I had nearly 200K words, a bunch of floor plans and diagrams, and chapters that expanded into areas that needed development. In total, this will impact all subsequent gazetteers. It fills a void when players create their characters, both mechanically and from a role-playing aspect. It is immensely useful to me as a writer, because it sets up the background of the Great Caldera's realms.

Happy New Year to all of you!
I made a fortuitous and auspicious encounter a few days back, which resulted in more good news for Calidar's "Beyond the Skies" kickstarter. (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ambreville/calidar-beyond-the-skies/posts/1453790) At this time, we're just a few hundred dollars from blowing past the 2nd stretch goal, which means more illustrations added to the book's contents.
As Calidar's crowdfunding reached new heights, I connected with the folks at BattleBards.com who kindly offered a free reward for Calidar's current and upcoming backers. This includes a custom Calidar Soundboard with 8-10 sound tracks. These tracks will enhance and add nuances to the experience of playing in the World of Calidar. The Soundboard provides easy access to the audio and the ability to organize and play tracks on-the-fly. They can be listened to individually or layered with multiple tracks for added effect.
This is a mockup image for the Calidar Soundboard
There is no access fee associated with this reward, which is offered to Calidar backers at First Mate or higher pledge levels. Battlebards successfully completed their own Kickstarter recently and is poised to launch their new service by the end of January 2016. Registration to qualify for the free rewards will begin by the end of Calidar's crowdfunding campaign, January 7th, and end on March 31st at midnight.
Battlebards.com is the most expansive tabletop sound library ever assembled, along with tools built specifically to use the audio masterfully during games. Tailor-made background music inspired by fantasy races, voiceover scripts written to bring life to everyday character interactions, and a colossal array of bone-crushing, spell-fire-blasting sound effects: this is immersive tabletop gaming at its best. Stay tuned for further updates on this subject.
Don't forget the extra reward at Admiral pledge level, which was another offer that came up during the crowdfunding effort. Joe Garcia, illustrator for "Beyond the Skies," kindly offered to sketch a free character for Admiral backers. This process will also start at the end of the crowdfunding campaign. As with the Battlebards offer today, Joe's generous contribution was announced via my earlier Kickstarter project update (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ambreville/calidar-beyond-the-skies/posts/1441448) (it isn't listed in the reward's description).

If you haven't backed Calidar "Beyond the Skies" as yet, there are just a few days left to do so. This new release goes beyond bringing to life fantasy gods, their personal relations, and politics between pantheons. It also provides a massive list of individual powers available to mortal followers, zealots, and priests (based on their piety levels), as well as divine favors encouraging desirable behavior, and divine wounds reflecting discontent among deities. "Beyond the Skies" unveils new information about world souls, the Dread Lands, native monsters, shamans of the tribes, spirits of nature, and seitha prospecting. Divine servants, demons, incarnates, and household godlings also make an appearance, along with a host of floor plans detailing temples and the lairs of secret brotherhoods, each an invitation to run adventures. Calidar's background dynamics involve a dark peril that threatens to destroy both the divine pantheons, the world souls, and the mortal universe, evoking a pervasive sense of impending doom.
This book is crucial for the understanding of Calidar as an RPG campaign setting because it fleshes out a lot of information about the ten realms of the Great Caldera and the origins of their peoples. In its own way, it qualifies as a macro-gazetteer. It will directly impact all future gazetteers, and thus is a must for fans of this game world. The pantheons are also designed in a such a way that they can be used in other game settings with minimal trouble. If you haven't jumped in yet, click here! Here's a fun preview of The World of Calidar's "Beyond the Skies," an EnWorld exclusive (http://www.enworld.org/forum/content.php?3123-Eagle-Riding-Knights-A-Last-Look-At-Bruce-Heard-s-BEYOND-THE-SKIES#.Vo0XyVlAqYQ) unveiling the flying seminary of an eagle-knights' order. This shows how a book about deities brings to life details on the realms of the Great Caldera, just like a gazetteer. That's something you can use as an adventure on Calidar or on any other game world...

I'm already in. How's it shaping up? I don't mean in terms of stretch goals or anything, I don't need any more sweets after the holidays. Is the level of support such that you can consider more projects (or, god forfend, to leverage WotC on a Mystara project)?
Less than a day left! Only $600 away from 7 illustrations per pantheon!
I can attest to the quality of both the highly inventive setting and the gorgeous cartography in the first book. This is "old school" "classic" detail with quality cartography that inspires adventures. Solid useful descriptions herein but not so much as to overload the brain. It really is good.
This is the perfect time to jump into the world of Calidar! You can add the first book, the original poster maps, and get in on the supplements in print if you so desire. The prices for the print books are amazingly reasonable.
And now we are only $149 away from that stretch goal...
I like illustrations.
Just a few minutes left before the KS event ends. If you're still interested, contact me privately through the KS page about late pledges. There will be a post-KS option for those interested.
Cool floorplan!
