...which one would it be?  Which would you hand out to gamers as opposed to non-gamers?  What "diamond in the rough" out there just needs a little momentum and exposure?

Probably PTA, now I need to go away and think about why, though part of why is that I don't think it uses the term rpg once throughout the text.

Assuming non-gamers, if it were gamers it would probably be the not yet out Deluxe BRP book so as to encourage new BRP designs.

I guess the Moldvay Basic D&D - it's simple enough for most non-gamers and a way of saying "remember when" to gamers.

Sosthenes, I don't know anything about Prince Valiant.  Can you give me a brief description or link?

Steffan O'Sullivan has a nice overview.

It's a very simple game, just two stats, decisions are made by flipping coins (or any other even-odd random generator), all nicely illustrated by samples from the comics. Greg Stafford might be a religious kook, but at least he knows how to write games.

NEMESIS.  It's a simple, straight-forward distillation of the One Roll Engine, combining managable dice pools with obvious inspiration from Basic Roleplaying.  I think it's a neat bridge between contemporary game design and classic sensibilities.
