This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: NicephorusHave you read Cherryh's Chanur series?  It focuses mainly on cat/lion people.

I listed the Hani as one of the instances I am aware of.

Quote from: J ArcaneMy big favorites in terms of literature have been Sterling and Card, though I haven't bothered to read any of Card's stuff past the third Ender book and Lovelock.  What I've heard of the second Ender trilogy gives me shivers from it's apparent awfulness.

I've read a lot of Card, but little Stierling, and none of it recent.

Quote from: J ArcaneAnd yeah, I definitely get some stuff from media and RPGs and such.  I think you do yourself a disservice by assuming it's all crappy though, there's been some great stuff done in either.  Anime in particular has seen some really great SF, besides just Cowboy Bebop.  Animation and Sf just go hand in hand so very well, what with not having to blow so much cash on SFX budgets.  ;)

Hi J!

I never said Anime was crappy, and never meant to imply it. I said I didn't like it. It's purely due to the artistic conventions, which I loathe. Bebop suffered comparitively little from this, so I was able to enjoy it on its own terms. I'm sure there's lots of awesome anime - my son loves it, and he's no dummy - but I really can't enjoy most of it. The further the work strays from anime convention, the better I am able to appreciate it.

Also, I never said all TV SF was crap. I loved Star Wars - all three movies... there were no episodes I through III - and the various Treks. The cartoon Star Wars mini-segments were very well done, and there are a number of SF movies I love - Blade Runner, Starship Troopers, Total Recall, etc. There is a lot of SF crap out there though. :D

It's a good thing then that most of the best SF anime doesn't really hold to the "conventions" I suspect you're referring to (though of course I'm just guessing, based on what most people who say they dislike anime go on about.  More detail would make suggestions easier.  ;)).  Stuff like Ghost in the Shell SAC, Wings of Honneamise, and Gunslinger Girl.  There's some of course that do still lay on some of the sillier visual stunts and such, like Trigun, but that's largely part of it's charm.  That and it did sci-fi western before Firefly was a twinkle in Joss Whedon's eye. ;)

Ah! I'd forgotten Ghost in the Shell SAC! That was good too. I don't know the others you list, except for Trigun - GIK! Sorry! Like I said, it's the anime stylings I can't bear, not the stories.

I figured you wouldn't  Which is a shame, because it's really quite a fantastic story.

I concur, on Trigun. I generally dislike anime, in no small part due to its fans, but Trigun is phenomenal.

Most of my SF experience is through anime.  So when I think of SF:

Giant fucking robots (With or without Rocket Punch or Super Inazuma Kick.)

Power Armor (40K does it the bestest.)

Big battleships (The more unrealistic, the better.  Piss on Joe Haldeman!)

Joe Haldeman (I was drunk, big J!  I didn't mean what I said!)

Space Marines (See power armor.)

TRIGUN: The Planet Gunsmoke. Deep Space Planet Future Gun Action. (I just like typing out the whole title.)

Dogfights.

Swordfights.

Yeah.
teamchimp: I'm doing problem sets concerning inbreeding and effective population size.....I absolutely know this will get me the hot bitches.

You know what's funny is I think if we asked the question of non-SF readers, that is people whose only exposure to SF is movies and TV's we might get very different answers.

Adult Swim last night did as one of the joke cards between commercials, an "Adult Swim glossary".

One of the entries was something to the effect of "Anime:  Shows rock, fans suck."

On an unrelated note, Trigun didn't do it for me. Pacifism is icky.
