This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I'm not even sure I like RPGs anymore ....

Sadly we had people come in to bitch about the OSR and they were not trolling.  Now they just bitch at us in the politics threads.

The Exploited.

For me, the best of RPGing is long gone.... Late 90s to early 2000 was the golden age. Although I cut my teeth in the 80s with Basic D&D. The gaming was great, not because of the releases per se, but more because of the groups/style I was playing at the time. Everything else has paled in comparison... Those games of WFRP and Vampire, where we played Sabbat vamps were fucking intense.

But what can you do? I still play online and I enjoy it - Just not as much.

I think the OSR is fantastic. Some truly great games have come along in a world now dominated by the 'pop music' of RPGs (D&D4e, 5e).

For sure, there's some muck out there too, and there are certain people trying to cash in. Fuck 'em.... Just ignore their shit.

Yeah, but the point I was trying to convey is that we get idiots all the time so of course the trolling attempt work.  We simply have too many idiots.

Quote from: JMiskimen;1144715For instance, I hate the OSR. It's a group of so-called 'writers' or 'creatives' who are just rephrasing the works of better men and trying desperately to make a buck on it. They are not innovative, nor are they any kind of genius.

Well criticizing "them" is easy but the reality is that the OSR is comprised of folks doing their own thing with over 5900 self-labeled products on DriveThruRPG with 692 of them again self-labeled as core rulebook. Along thousands of social media posts self labeling themselves as OSR, like I do with my Bat in the Attic Blog. So who specifically, you have an issue with and what did they do to upset you? Myself with the Majestic Fantasy RPG? Kevin Crawford? Matt Finch? Stuart Marshall? Chris Gonnerman? Perhaps James Raggi? Or perhaps one of the newer folks like Gavin Norman of Necrotic Gnome who publishes Old School Essentials? A blogger? A podcaster?

I also point out that many of those who label themselves as part of the OSR, including myself, have released a open content that an individual can use, such as yourself, to show how the rest of us are doing it "wrong". Including the ability to repeat the original OSR hack by taking the open content of the D20 SRD, strip out the newer mechanics and using the result as the foundation of one's work.

I will warn you those, that a large swath of the OSR started out with that in mind, like the Pundit. This resulted not in the OSR being supplanted by people doing the "right" thing. But rather the OSR as a whole increasing in diversity.

Quote from: kidkaos2;1144781I think this guy was just trolling and a bunch of people fell for it.

I do, however, have some similar feelings about OSR --- but without the bad attitude.

I've never liked d20 games and really don't understand why they remain a dominant force in RPGs half a century into the hobby.  I get them being popular in the beginning when the hobby was new, but now that there are so many mechanics out there I cannot understand why the 6 stat d20 formula remains so popular.  The main reason I don't like d20 games is because the d20 is so swingy.  I really prefer a game mechanic that has a bell curve to the results.  That being said, I don't begrudge people who do like d20 and OSR games -- I'm actually jealous of those people, because there's so much more material out there for those folks.

Hacking a d20 based game to be a 3d6 based one isn't that hard, and then you have both the abundant material and your bell curve mechanic (which I also prefer TBH).

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

Quote from: JMiskimen;1144788That's right - come out swinging ...
18 posts in, and you've got it all figured out ... the hubris and desire to be self important here are often as thick as the bullshit.

Whined? No, but I have called people for what and who they are. I am a troll of the worst order because I called your sacred cow for what it is and that bothers you enough to post in my little experiment to prove me right.

It was just a meme dude!

It was a "Social Experiment!"

It was just bait and some fell for it, most of those tried to befriend you, and you, like the douche bag that you are reacted with douchebaggery. Fuck you asshole

Quote from: JMiskimen;1144715Seems like everything I like, most others despise and vice versa. While that may not be a deal-breaker for most of you .... It really makes it hard to find a table to game with.

See what I mean?

Welcome to the Site, JMiskimen.

I'm a Traveller fan. There's not a whole lot of Traveller talk here, but why not? Here's my Trav experiences:

  • Started with CT with the LBB in the small box.
  • Went on to MegaTrav. Not my favorite system or setting.
  • Skipped everything else by GDW.
  • Bought just about every sourcebook for GurpsTrav. Never played it.
  • Got Mongoose Trav 1E. I actaully enjoyed it.
  • Got Mongoose Trav 2E. The real gems here are the boxed sets: Drinax and Great Rift.
  • Just finished a game of Trav Hero (That's Traveller with the 6E Hero System.)

Start some threads on Traveller, you never know who might be interested.

Maybe you don't like RPG's anymore. I've wondered that about myself from time to time. If you did like RPG's, what would they be like?

This is my first post....here. I lurked for a time then took a break and returned (took a left turn and) mistook RPG . Net for this place and "I was like WTF? Where is the RPG Pundit? He had some sense." ( I began to question my own sanity. "Is this some Mandella effect shit here? If there is such a thing.")

Manic Modron

I have to agree with several posters here.  All evidence the OP has provided reads like "I can't find anyone to put up with my shit, so things I used to like aren't good anymore."

Does it make sense?  No, but they don't either.
