Title: I'm looking for an OGL version of the 7th Sea system 1st edition
Post by: Lychee of the Exchequer on December 19, 2021, 08:03:16 AM
I'm looking for an OGL version of the 7th Sea system 1st edition.

Does such a beast exist ?

Strictly speaking, I suppose I'm searching for a version of the Roll & Keep system without any IP attached to it.

Truthfully, I would be happy to find a good system - whatever its source - for a swashbuckling RPG without any commercial IP attached to it.

For the record, I really like the D&D system and many of its iterations and mutations, but it would not be a good system for a swashbuckling RPG in my opinion.

Also, I'm not a systems guy, and I don't pretend to be, so I would be ill equipped to know what the best RPG swashbuckling system actually is (knowing one's limitations, and all that jazz  8)).

Is there a reason why you don't just use 7th Sea 1e?

I hear that Savage Words is a great system.  I have checked out thier Pirates of the Spanish Main and it has lots of cool maneuvers and fighting styles you can do, even if it is not very historically accurate.

Also, chrck out GURPS Swashbuckling.  You can do anything with GURPS, if you can stomach a 3d6 mechanic.

Do you want a generic roll and keep system with no setting? Or do you want roll and keep with a swashbuckling setting that has no IP and is free to use?

I can't think of a generic RollKeep system off the top of my head.  :( Been there at the beginning with L5R and thereon, but I don't remember if a generic was ever spun off before I fot off that train. Weird, because Storyteller & WEG d6 both have their generics... Would be interesting to see what happened since I was last on for the ride.  8)

Alderac made a d20 version of the setting. It's still available on dtrpg, through Chaosium, as 'Swashbuckling Adventurers'.

Well, I'm looking for a swashbuckling system that has no IP - that is, that can be used commercially without strings attached and without having to ask permission from anyone.

And if by miracle there existed such a system with Roll & Keep roots, I would pray the Dice Lords - but any system unburdened by IP and sufficiently swashbuckly would suffice  ;D.

Interesting. I will check it out, even though I will be unlikely to use it. Thanks.

Well, a generic Roll & Keep system suited for swashbuckling, with or without a setting, and with no commercial strings attached would be my ideal.

Absent that, any system which can do swashbuckling and which can be used commercially without having to pay royalties or whatever would be peachy too. Not d20 a priori, because I think it's not very swashbuckly (the combat system is too abstract).

I would like to do some professionnal work with such a system, and 7th Sea 1e would require I ask permission for it, which I am loath to do.

Will do. I enjoy GURPS products in general, and although I won't use GURPS for such a project, the GURPS line is usually very informative and useful.

I don't think such thing exist, however I think roll & keep system is not copyrighted, and it would not be hard to pile of serial numbers from 7s1.

This is a system that is a good candidate for a retro-clone.

Make it so, someone!

Also, check out Honor + Intrigue.  It is fantastic!

I'm not sure about the legal side of that. Has someone got some idea about it ?

You can't copyright ttrpg mechanics, so you'd have to file serial numbers off. I cant tell you the specifics of the rulings off the top of my head but if you want to steal the roll and keep mechanics you wouldnt need an OGL to do it. Now you can't use their setting material/trademarks/trade dress/etc so you'd have to file the serial numbers off. It'd pretty much that Douche Fox did with his warhammer 2e clone, every D&D retro clone and whatnot.

So yeah, go nuts just don't touch trade dress and whatever the hell the 7th sea setting is and you should be good. List of attributes and list of skills. Attribute + skill number of d10s assemble the pool and keep the highest up to your attribute then add em together.

I think you can probably keep panache or whatever it's called. On a side note didn't john wick get outed as a sex pest or something recently?

Yes. It's possible, if you avoid the IP:

The nations: easy enough to omit, or use real world names.
Atts: just rename. Paanche should be ok.
Skills: nothing profound as I recall, just use your own list.
Swordsman schools: Here's where the IP is.  You should rename them to things like "Sword and cloak school" or "Two blade school."
Magic: More IP. But I doubt anyone cares about 7th Seas weird magic anyway.
Secret societies: see magic.

I might have it wrong,  but I think Wick was not outed as a sex pest, but for being a Big Meanie who sometimes said things that hurt people's feelings.

In general, game mechanics aren't copyrighted - but the text to express them can be. I made a very outdated page on RPGs and copyright which might help. https://darkshire.net/jhkim/rpg/copyright/

Pundit might chime in here - he made an alternate version of the Amber Diceless RPG called "Lords of Olympus" which reproduced the mechanics on many points, but avoided any copyrighted text. In general, there are lots of RPGs with very similar mechanics, so if what you're looking for is just core mechanics, I don't think you should have a problem.

Yep, Wick has cruel humor...I take that way, but I haven't been his target. I really like his work.

I think making magic more reality inspired would work. Like wtf even was with this Porte school of blood portals, I mean it's cool on it's own, but as Fake French Magic?

QuoteSecret societies: see magic.

I mean that's even easier to easily rename, it's not like SS of 7th Sea are somehow utterly unique.

QuoteThanks for all the info. And I will check that page, jhkim.

I also found some very setting free game lately called Heroes and Hardships. I'm not sure if it's per se very swashbuckling, but it seems to aspire to setting/time neutral heroic roll-and-keep adventure. May be worthy a check
