Title: Hunger: Zombies Must Feed
Post by: RPGPundit on November 13, 2009, 10:47:05 AM
Does anyone here own this? Actually played it? How is it?

At first, I thought Hunger was just another "fight the zombies game", to the point that when I got it in the mail from Brett, I was not in a rush to crack it open (there are still a couple of reviews before it to go). But The Wench loves Zombies, and she opened it up, and squealed with excitement at the notion that "this lets you play Zombies!"

Now, The Wench not being an experienced gamer, I thought she was probably misunderstanding or something, but apparently, she was right. I'd never, ever heard of this idea before.

All Flesh Must Be Eaten has bandied about the idea of playing as the zombies since the core (it was the last Deadworld option), and expanded on it in some of the supplements, most notably Enter the Zombie.

As well, while not survival horror or the like, AD&D2E Ravenloft had a trilogy of adventures that ended with all the PCs becoming undead, and the options ran the gamut of AD&D undead standards, including zombies.

In videogames we have Left4Dead in Versus mode. So you can play the Special infected zombies. Some of the Zombi board games touch on this.

But this sounds interested. Who sells it?

Yeah, but as far as I know this is the first RPG dedicated entirely to that concept.

I own it, have played it, and had a lot of fun doing so, but given that I wrote it, I'm not sure that's much help.  :)

The times I played it (as opposed to running it), were with friends who understood the game's premise and had played it with me as the gamemaster, so I'm not sure that helps either.

I can say that I had a lot of fun writing it as well as playing it.  It was just one of those ideas I got while watching Day, Dawn, and then Land of the Dead and couldn't shake the notion it might make for a good one-shot.  The epiphany mechanic (where you remember skills and recover memories you had in life) works really well once everyone gets involved and there ends up being a lot of competitive play as the players try to outdo one another and eat more humans.  Great for a one-shot.  Can't vouch for an extended campaign though, having never played one.

I was going to run a Hunger game at a friend's Halloween party this year--had the scenario all mapped out and everything--but we ended up spending more time playing with the kids than we had planned, which is always a good thing.
