Title: "How the Hell do you have a 20 foot reach at 1st level?!" - NF's Pathfinder Musings
Post by: Nightfall on September 19, 2011, 11:31:42 PM
So what I thought was going to be a fighter, a rogue, a bard and an alchemist...I only got half right. The rogue decided to go sorcerer/oracle at the last minute (don't ask. I still can't figure this out.) The fighter who I thought really wanted unbreakable (and be an atheist) decided monk was a better choice.

So when the first fight broke out, he pretty much hit the guy coming towards him from 20 feet away. How you ask? Apparently I didn't realize that his monk weapon (Kyoketsu shoge) has that kind of reach. 20 feet?! On a monk weapon?! Against 6 1st level commoners?! It wasn't a contest. They all pretty much went down. (though the sorcerer/oracle did manage to punch someone in the face.)

This group however DID get further than the last one, as they managed to get some research done but also lost a day to Splatter Man as he got the second letter in. Still, I would have liked to maybe get a little more info than just two. (I rolled and got The Lopper and Father Charlatan.)

Other than that, (and the fact one again the music didn't work out as much as I had hope. I did have speakers though! I think though it annoyed the nearby player because I had it fairly...loud.)

Oh well. Up next, round two with group one! Here's to successfully scaring the piss out of them some more! :)

I strongly recommend keeping music low while gaming. Especially if it's creepy music for a horror game, as the players will pick up on it subconsciously.

And you avoid the guys at the far end of the table making you repeat everything.

Well I'll try that next time around.

I just felt the opening could have been cooler if it had been heard. But that's just me.

While playing a RPG I'm of the opinion that everyone being able to communicate clearly without annoyances is vastly more important than "cool music."

..although the mental image of the player next to the speakers being annoyed by the LOUD is comedy gold.

Besides, one person's cool music is another person's douchechill; one person might think it would be cool to play Dethklok or Evanescence during an intense D&D session, while others would be taking their pencils to their eardrums. The quality and appropriateness of music is entirely subjectve.

Planet,

That may be so. But I got this off the internets. :p This isn't "NF's ideas for cool atmospheric music". It's from Paizo's own messageboards.

So take it for what you will. There's very little Evanescane or Disturbed on this.

Keeping music synched up with what's going on is more hassle than it's worth, usually, especially over the course of a long fight. A little bit here or there can be OK, but you want to treat it more like musical cues in an old movie, and less like a soundtrack.

Well these are only now 2nd level...so the fights generally aren't THAT long. Especially with only 4 people.

But you make a valid point about parts versus whole.

Every second that you're fiddling with the music is a second that you're not paying attention to the game, and without fiddling with the music, it's really easy to run to the end of the 1-2 songs you prepped for the fight and have the rest of the playlist start going.

Well like I said, there's already a playlist I'm using...

So sync'ing isn't nearly a problem.

Another answer to the opening question is: Enlarge, Combat Reflexes, Combat Patrol, Long Spear...

Yes well we didn't have that because we didn't have anyone cast that OR use those one of those two feats (nor did Longspear come into play)

But thanks for that Crane.

I don't normally try to construct monsters so they're designed to fight the PCs..at least until they're really annoyed someone who has the resources to send appropriate opponents...but Invisible monsters would be useful on the monk since total concealment negates AoOs*. Phantom fungus attack! Or if you can get the lights to go out somehow...darkmantles maybe...

*at least, in regular 3.5 it does.

Fortunately there are some incorporeal monsters along with Pathfinder's own haunts that cannot be damaged merely by hitting them. So I'm less concerned about that.

Right now what is bugging me is the fact I have two players that SAY they wanted to play...but didn't make EITHER session. So now I'm like "I split up the group for these guys?!"

So...I dunno.
