This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hello! New to the site just saying hey...

Hi! I'm not well versed in many RPG's except for D&D. I started in my late teens in '92 with 2e a fact that aggravates me as I completely missed basic and 1st edition which came in my adolescence. We always kept it simple, used character kits at Randy's (buddy and DM) discretion and never got into S&P, but had a blast all though college.

After school and time and distance happened we now get together once a year for a 3 day session in a rented ski cabin. It's been core 3e for about 14 years, 14 hours a day of goodness! I'm trying to get a 1e or basic game going sometime too. Don't know why I shared all that crap but there you have it. Happy to be here!

Welcome!

Three of my college buddies and I do a long weekend gaming getaway to the middle of nowhere, usually in some sort of VRBO in the mountains. At our age there's something magical about getting away from the trappings of our adult day-to-day. Glad to see somebody else doing something similar.

Welcome to wacky world.

Heres your complimentary WWII helmet. Hope you survive the shelling. :D

We did about the same thing when I moved out to the radioactive wastelands of Mitchigoom. Most of the players I picked up would drive out for the weekend.

Are you familiar with the OSR and retroclones?

If not, here's the rub. There are legal free versions of OD&D and AD&D made by fans available online.

Here's my favorite retroclone:

SWORDS & WIZARDRY: White Box (aka, OD&D with only the first 3 books)

Also, lots of people are doing crazy cool stuff with early D&D concepts. Here's my absolute favorite fan creation. Again, all free.

MAZES & MINOTAURS

Yeah I've heard of them, really cool stuff. I never really delved into the history of the hobby until a few years ago, when I started to read up more on Gygax, TSR, and the versions of the games I missed growing up. It's like I have this bitter misplaced nostalgia about it, I love bending my friends ears about the "old days". I'll be sure to check those out thanks!

So says the OSR thieves. And more than a few are very not free.

The thieves, we hates them, precious.

(The actual owners of the game would disagree with you.)

I remember Tim Kask in an interview talking about walking through an early GenCon and tearing up photo copied pages of OD&D right at the tables...

Swords & Wizardry: White Box and Mazes & Minotaurs have always been free.

Most of the retroclones are free, all legally based on WotC's own OGL.

There are retro-clones and re-imagined systems that are not free. I did not link to those.

Hi, Welcome to the RPGSite! Just remember if you are playing a Basic D&D game to roll up at least two or three extra characters. They seem very vulnerable, especially at lower levels. We used to have fun to see how many epic ways that we could have our first level D&D characters die!

Rhodes Greece. The Street of the Knights. Famous as a stronghold for the Knights Templar, The Knights Hospitalar, and even more famous as the site where the World's largest Siege engine was built. Also home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Colossus of Rhodes, pictured here below @ 32 meters tall, as a comparison the Statue of Liberty (not including the Pedestal) is 46 meters tall . Opus Dei says this is a good choice for an avatar!
