This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Have you gamed with a first-year gamer this year?

A simple question: How many of you have actually gamed at least one session in the past year with someone who had less than one year's experience in RPGs?

Note: YOUR CHILDREN (or other family) DON'T COUNT.

(Not this year).

There was one newbie gamer in the first 4E game I played, back in the summer of 2008.  Turned out this person played just like a munchkin powergamer.

This person came from a background of playing MMOs like WoW and EverQuest, and never played any tabletop rpgs previously.

The Worid

I helped introduce 4 new people to RPGs this year, in two different games (two with Mutants and Masterminds, and two with SW Saga, switching after a session to Castles and Crusades).
Playing: Dungeons & Dragons 2E
Running: Nothing at the moment
On Hold: Castles and Crusades, Gamma World 1E

Tahmoh

other than my lil brother my whole group is new to rpg's and though we've had a few minor issues with getting the hang of some of the concepts, they're a pretty cool bunch who seem to find new ways to surprise me every time we play a game(which atm isnt as often as i'd like but hey thats life).

Jason D

One of the players in my Lord of the Rings RPG campaign has been playing for less than year.

He started playing one guy's D&D4E, then joined someone else's SWSE campaign, before hopping over to the campaigns of Dark Heresy, Scion, and Lord of the Rings that I've run in the last year.

Akrasia

Yes, one of the players in my summer S&W campaign (now on hiatus).

Contributor to: Crypts & Things (old school \'swords & sorcery\'), Knockspell, and Fight On!

Does the son of another player in the group count?

Incidentally...why doesn't family count?

Yes, she came along with her husband to a session of Pathfinder and has been an asset to game ever since.

Yes.
My Igbar group has recently added in a brand newbie.

And my online group has one as well, a strange situation of a guy who builds settings but has never actually played tabletop until now, only he is having his first experience in a weekly online game.
Currently running 1 live groups and two online group in my 30+ year old campaign setting.

Yup!

My OD&D mega-events were a hit with people who brought a noob friend or their kid for their first RPG experience.   Same with my 4e demos.   At the con we did a special 4e demo setup in the boardgame area of the con and we got lots of people who loved wargames or boardgames who never tried an RPG and "4e-as-skirmish battle" was right up their alley.
