Title: Hairfoot's Happy Holiday Hoard
Post by: Hairfoot on December 13, 2009, 04:43:06 AM
By sheer accident I found an obscure ad for a box of D&D books going cheap and picked them up today.

It doesn't rival Joe's hoard (http://www.therpgsite.com/showthread.php?t=15507), but it pads out my collection nicely.

For 30 Australian shekels (US$28) I got:

Basic

1E modules

Dragonlance:

Accessories

2E

3E

Dungeon Magazine

A snotload of Dragonlance, which I'm not that into, but I'm very happy with the B-series modules and In Search of the Unknown.  Lots of good modules, and I really dig Aurora’s Whole Realms Catalogue.

In Search of Adventure looks pretty wicked for a campaign.  Has anyone played it out?

Why did so much 2E stuff get dull, tacky titles?  Tales of Enchantment?  Doom of Daggerdale?  Cleric's Challenge?  Bleh.

But then, 1E's Tell Tall Tales of the Wee Folk is the sort of thing you'd show someone if you wanted to confirm for them the worst cliches about RPGers.

I haven't decided if I'm going to keep all of it yet, so PM me if there's anything there you're keen on.

Oop.  Forgot to list the snotload I mentioned.

Dragonlance:

  • Lost City (B4)
I wonder how many people "lost their virginity" with this one. It was the first module that was translated in Italian when the Italian edition of the "Mentzer Red D&D Box" came out. I had already discovered the English edition, but "The Lost City" was the first module I bought ans played, too.

They put the uber-evil dude, Zargon, into the "Elder Gods" supplement for 3.5E. It would seem that I'm not the only one who remembers fondly this module :)

Good job!  I had a nice yard sale find this summer but it was about a third the size of your haul.

Crap, I'm envious!  :)

Regarding:

  • Greyhawk Gazetteer: Grand Duchy of Karmeikos
  • Greyhawk Gazetteer:Principality of Glantri
  • Greyhawk Gazetteer: Five Shires
  • Greyhawk Gazetteer: Orcs of Thar

Those Gazetteers actually are not set in Greyhawk, and have nothing to do with it.  Rather, they are set in the D&D 'Known World' setting (first introduced in the module X1), which eventually would become known as 'Mystara.'

Karameikos and Glantri are excellent.

Not everything is listed right.  I went with an alliterative name rather than checking.

"Thar" should have been a give-away.  Isn't that in the Forgotten Realms?

Every dawg has its day!  It's a heartwarming Christmas tale.  I also saved an orphanage and taught a cold-hearted miser the error of his ways.

It's amazing how far 30 bucks will go.

No, it's Mystara.

There's a Thar in FR, too.  Right there (http://www.ovarus.com/lfr/images/lfr_mediumsize.jpg) in the north above the Moonsea.

It's also an orc-land (http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Thar).

Interesting.  I don't know much about the FR (simply what is contained in the Bioware games).

All of the 'Gazetteers' are set in Mystara, and all are for D&D (not AD&D).

The seller tried to give it to me for ten bucks.  She was going to throw it out.  I insisted I was robbing her and she took thirty, but she said she just wanted to make sure it went to a good home.

Some D&D players are just awesome.

That would have been a crime to throw all that out.  Awesome indeed.  I wonder if she was the player or someone else in the family.

There are rules for adapting the Gazs to AD&D in some of the later ones (Darokin, for example). Nothing that one couldn't came up with by himself.

It was fun to read how "the differences between the two games are small enough to allow this", whereas the party line had always been "What is for D&D is not for AD&D". I remember wondering what caused this change in marketing.

You are going to start a campaign based on the items in your haul - aren't you?

It's her, but her group stopped using books years ago and now just free-forms with a d20.  She's moving house and didn't want to take the books, but didn't have the time to Ebay them either, so she put up an A4 sign in a shop window  in the hope someone would spot it before she threw them out.

My master plan is finish our Pathfinder campaign early next year, then bash some B-modules with Swords & Wizardry to see if the system's a good fit.

Plenty of those maps need little or NO conversion to use with Pathfinder.

Still sounds like you got a deal and a half.

"Orcs of Thar" remains the only fantasy campaign I've run to date. I have very fond memories of it, we had a lot of crazy fun. But to be honest other than the character generation rules for monster races I'm not sure how much I actual use I got from the book itself.

I'm very happy with all the maps.  Much of my older gear is used, and many of the maps are gone or crumbling.  I'm looking forward to running more overland, take-and-hold adventures now.
