Not a prank. GenCon staff says burning smell in building...

Emergency over... Gamers are getting the all clear to go back in now.
That's not cool. Here's praying everyone makes it out okay.
Wonder if it was a real fire, and not just some moron who likes pulling fire alarms for a joke.
Yep. There's a real fire somewhere, or... Someone actually managed to summon a Balrog.
I'm relaying the information on the Haven, there (http://www.therpghaven.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=608).
Thanks for the updates, GD.
That's the more exercise then most of them got all year!
Waddle fatfucks! Waddle toward the doors!

"There were an astonishing 17 deaths and 4,315 people taken to area hospitals as Gen Con was evacuated, forcing gamers to walk up to 20 yards to an exit"
I must say, there are a significant number of quite fat and quite skinny people in Zach's pics... he must be avoiding photographing all those buff gamers.

They're too busy to go to Gen Con, remaining online to threaten to kick people's asses over katanas and the right way to play an elf.
Hmmmm?... not.
Wasn't too busy to go. Actually went, and dropped off Koltar on Wednesday Night. Went to get a two-day badge and the price was more than $80. Couldn't quite swing that then. A one day badge, $50.
Got paid on Thursday, however all my business websites were up for renewal, (and on a deadline... wouldn't want to lose the domain names and such) so I had to throw several hundred dollars at that to insure a steady income stream for the forthcoming year.
I would have used some savings and attended, unfortunately the Annual Family Vacation trip to Florida had depleted those reserves in the first week of August.
You can believe me when I say it was a painful experience not being able to attend. So I did the next best thing, and turned on Twitter and tracked all the GenCon activity. Made a few new friends that way.
Maybe next year...
Well, I hope between all the threads and Twitter, you were at least able to follow most of the action. Here's hoping you can make it next year!

...or they might be the emergency services workewrs who had to respond to the fire alarm call.
In my neigfhborhood here in southwestern Ohio for at least a year there was a nearby firehouse that had a weekly
D&D game going. Since they are on call and have to be at the Fire station all day - on Sundays they would have and all day D&D session.
....OR the 'buff' gamers as Kyle Aaron puts it might be over in Afghanistan or Iraq. Many soldiers on leave check to see what the newst D&D books are to takew back with them while they are over there.
.....or the 'buff gamers' may not have been at the exhibition hall at that time of night - but instead at the many bars, restaurants, and taverns that had special deals going on for Gen Con gamers & visitors. The so-called 'buff' ones were alternating nights of partying and gaming.
I know I saw PLENTY of 'buff' people (both male and female) in town wearing
Gen Con 4 day pass badges when I was walking back and forth to the convention site from my hotel.

Absolutely--there were some folks who were in splendid shape. Just teasing about those of us (like me) who are not.
Hey, I didn't get to tell you thanks for running the Jail n' Bail. It's a great part of Gen Con, and I appreciate that it's all for charity. What a wonderful thing to do! We'll have to find you more Klingons, though! :)
It was cool to see you again - sorry we missed each other in '08 there.
The Charity Jail raised $1,309.49 for IMSA.
Happened to have with me some of our count sheets from past Gen Cons - the Thursday total was almost twice what we did in 2007.
Our Saturday donations were down compared to previous years.
People seemed a little 'tighter' with their money this year. I also noticed that the freebie swag and grab bag stuff was very thin compared to previous Gen Cons. (also probably because of the recent economy.
It looked like a lot of folks wanted to spend on games or donate - but they were cautious are more careful about when and where.

I think that's pretty close to the mark.
The fire alarm was caused by one of the hallway pizza vendors having a heat lamp explode. (Reportedly in a gout of flame)...
We got up mid-combat and walked out to the mall through one of the connector tunnels.
