Old age means getting better glasses prescriptions, apparently.

I can read it just fine, but I'm talking about the initial visual impact.

But maybe THAT brand confusion was the plan. Maybe since CP has been out of the market and Shadowrun is a mega-player, their plan was to visually piggyback on the Shadowrun imagery to get people interested once they saw the Cyberpunk wording.

AKA, if I use Elmore style art (or actual Elmore art) to pimp my fantasy RPG, then I'm obviously tapping into the Forgotten Realms branding.

The "tampon under the hat" is an old theater trick!

I learned it from an F/X guy who did haunted houses.

Like many theater tricks, its under the "if it works, use it!" rule.

More pics!!!

Um, Shadowrun is a fantasy/cyberpunk mashup. So if they were going to claim that it was Shadowrun, then where are the fantasy races that are on almost every Shadowrun cover?

The artist who did that piece and the covers for the Cyperpunk Red Jumpstart Kit is named Anselm Zielonka, his ArtStation site is here.
He has never worked on Shadowrun.

So when Elmore did the cover art for Star Frontiers and the black & white interior art for Traveller 4, those were obvious attempts to tap into the Forgotten Realms branding?
I want whatever it is you've been smoking!

I agree here. Elmore also did the cover art for Cyberpunk.

I disagree that the photos mean the con is irrelevant to gaming. We tend to take pics of interesting stuff. People sitting at a table playing RPGs tends not to be very interesting. And back before digital you had limited camera film to snap stuff. My old con photo album is full of odds-n-ends that just caught my interest at a moment had the camera ready.

My old GenCon vhs camcorder vids though were one looooooooooooong tour of the place, dealers area, various gaming rooms and displays, seminar rooms and people playing as passed by till ran out of steam.

The guy who did the cover art for Cyberpunk 2020 was Doug Anderson....

Bolding mine, because it shows the core of the problem. Pictures of gamers may not look interesting enough, so people take pics of everything else. The people who look at those pics notice everything else except for the gaming, so when more people are attracted to the cons by the pics - they are being attracted to everything else. A convention that originated around gaming now has gaming as second place (if not third or fourth) to the eye candy. This snowballs until the con doesn't focus on gaming as much as it is diluted by everything else.

Didn't you see the murder gnomes hiding in the lower left corner? I thought you had good vision!

I am talking INITIAL + VISUAL + IMPACT of the CP art, not that CP is trying to duplicate SR. Just grab eyeballs of their fans.

AKA, if I want to sell a game to D&D fans, putting a Dungeon / Dragon / Elf with Bow / Dwarf with Axe / Sorceress Chick on the cover of my product causes an Initial Visual Impact on those fans.

Yes it was! Because glossy color covers and b/w interiors are the exact same thing!!!

:p

I'm surprised the video game companies haven't descended upon GenCon like how Hollywood devoured ComicCon.

Whenever people tell me they're going to ComicCon, I ask them what comic books they're getting there and I love the confused looks on their faces.

Opaopajr

Oooh, a cosplay con! :p I keed, I keeed! :D

But honestly though, I dig gameplay photos too. And not just of wargame minis either. I like snaps of CCG game states where I can piece out what's going on. I like pics of RPG sprawls of books, notes, tables, doodles, props, etc. I sometimes like boardgame shots, but often it doesn't interest me unless the game state is remarkable. :)

But costumes and strangers are nice too. :D

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

1: Fucks sake now Koltar has ME doing it! Thanks for pointing that out. doh. I meant 1st ed Shadowrun.

2: If you look around you'll find those too. Probably lots over at BGG. But when I was doing gaming cons alot I had limited camera space and tended to snap stuff that looked interesting.

The other reason I have so few gameplay photos is... I hate interrupting people with "Hey? Can I photo that?" Though I have now and then if I had the camera ready and it looked like a pause. I actually never got a chance to photo a single session of Dragon Storm. Or video any. To me it feels a little tacky. Others are perfectly fine. But that was back in the bygone days of flash bulbs.

Now-a-days I'd more likely try and get gameplay photos with the phone as its less intrusive, and blinding. ahem.

It's good to see All's Quiet On the Martian Front getting some love anyhow.  The Alien Dungeon kickstarter debacle just about killed the game, though, oddly enough it let me clear out most of my stock.  I think the game itself had one major issue.  The starter set armies don't give the humans much of a chance.  You really need the weird desperate stuff, anti tripod guns and forlorn hope teams to stand a chance.

Thanks for the cool photos once again Koltar.
