This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Persimmon

I got my magenta box basic set for Christmas in 1981.  My brother & my best friend and I rolled up characters, Persimmon the Elf, Kanda the Dwarf, and Gorrdon the Fighter on New Year's Eve, 1981.  So today officially marks 40 years of RPGs.  And I still do like some B/X from time to time even if Castles & Crusades is my preferred game.

So what about you?  When did you start gaming & what was the game/system?

Joey2k

IIRC I was about 12 when I got the WEG Star Wars RPG (because D&D was satanic and not allowed   ::) ). So, about 35 years ago.

Klytus

I started with Mentzer red box D&D on the playground with my friends Zack and Bryce in 3rd grade, which would be 1983ish.
Klytus, I'm bored. What plaything can you offer me today?

An obscure body in the S-K System, Your Majesty. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet... "Earth".

Might be the youngest/newest person in the thread 😅.

I think it was either 2010 or 2011 where I played my first game in a Pathfinder Society group at a local store.
Resident lurking Chinaman

Palleon

I received Mentzer's Red Box for Xmas in '83.  So 38 years with dozens of games released since then.

For me, same boxed set (I think, could have been the red one), one year earlier.  Game was sometime in very late '80 at a family reunion a few days before New Years.  A relative ran a quick game to show me how it worked.  By the end of January, I was running my own group.

1984, Fighting Fantasy RPG, introduced via the gamebooks.

1986, same thing.

The Spaniard

1981 with the Moldvay boxed set, followed soon thereafter by the AD&D Players Handbook and Monster Manual.  Freshman year in HS 80-81.

1981, I got the Moldvay Basic Set for Christmas.  My life has never been the same since.

I got my Holmes set about two years after it came out. It was free. A casual friend had it and invited me to play. I made a thief, and moved to the first door of the dungeon after laboring over character generation for 20 minutes. My friend wasn't all that into the game, though. My thief died as soon as he touched the door.

"Wait, what." I asked, kind of perturbed.

"Yeah, you're dead," was his reply.

"HOW?"

"You're just dead. I'm gonna go play murderball. See ya."

So he left, and left it there with me and never came back for it. I decided I'd find someone else to play with and become the Dungeon Master.

So I guess I have been playing since '79, for around 42 years or suchlike.

Spinachcat

I've been playing Mazes & Minotaurs since it came out in 1972! :)

dungeon crawler

January 1975 original D&D that makes 47 years this month. My parents had no clue how this would change my life.

Fall 2014 with D&D Next for me. So that makes me the briefest player, and Spinachcat the oldest.

Arkansan

I started gaming in 2003 with 3rd edition D&D and the Star Wars RPG. So 18ish years now. Still good friends with the guy who got me in to gaming.
