The GAMA Board of Directors and Retail Division Board issued the following statement on June 10th:
"To Our Community:
The Game Manufacturers Association believes that Black Lives Matter. We unequivocally condemn racism and violence against people of color. We have been too late in making that statement with force, and we apologize. The injustices of today demand that every person of good conscience make clear where they stand and we wish we had been more proactive, more strident, and more effective with our voices. Innocent people of color are being killed in the streets of the communities where we live, and it is not acceptable.
We cannot responsibly hold our virtual convention, Origins Online, in this setting. Even if it were possible to hold it, it would not be appropriate to do so. So, we are announcing here that Origins Online is cancelled.
The Board must voice its loud thanks to those who worked enormously hard to assemble Origins Online in a completely inadequate window of time. GAMA's staff worked miracles, publishers hurried to learn new tools, fans took a chance to buy tickets. We could not be more grateful for their efforts, which we see and will not forget.
Every exhibitor, sponsor, and advertiser will be offered a full refund, as will every gamer who purchased a badge.
GAMA will match, dollar for dollar, any exhibitor, sponsor, advertiser, or vendor who donates the amounts they are owed for Origins Online to one of the organizations listed below. It is difficult to predict how many will take this opportunity, but the potential exists for the matched amounts to exceed $100,000, which we wholeheartedly hope will happen. The Board sees this as the next step, but not the final step, in the Association's journey.

I find it to be especially egregious and offensive that so many of these people, and these companies--make the absolutely smug and self righteous assumptions, and are eager to enforce through social, economic, and ideological tyranny that somehow it is impossible for an individual to believe that Black people, Black lives, matter. All people's lives matter. An individual can embrace that concept, and the importance of equality under the Law and justice--while not supporting the Black Lives Matter organization, or their corrupt and divisive ideology. So pathetic and sad.

The problem with GAMA and GenCon is they think they're more important to gamers than they are. By doing this, they've just encouraged a lot of who like the con scene to go look for smaller venues where they'll probably find all the gaming they'd like for a fraction of the cost.
I haven't followed any of the attempts to move cons online. How much of this is simply an indication that "We're cancelling out of solidarity with The Struggle" sounds a lot more noble than "No one is signing up for our hastily improvised online sort-of convention. Better cut our losses."?

I love conventions. I've been to the big, medium and small and I absolutely recommend small niche cons. They are wonderful and probably where I've had the most gaming fun over the decades. There are advantages to the larger cons, but the low cost, low expectation and mellow nature of small con is terrific. I'd love to see more small independent cons develop.
In the wake of CoronaChan, I wonder what the state of the hotel industry might be. In California, weddings are so lucrative (aka booze sales) that cons have a hard time competing on price. But who knows what fresh opportunities the "new normal" might offer.
