This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Fuck all you haters, I Like Clerics.

More seriously, um, how 'bout Tyr? From the FR.  A deity devoted, basically, to kicking ass for All The Right Reasons.

THERE'S a cool deity to worship.

I never played D&D enough to Clerics. I don't understand such hate.

IF I was playing in a D20/D&D game - I'd want to be really nice to the cleric - so I would get healed when I needed to.

If anyone ever presnted it in the right way - I'd play in a D&D game.

This is what a really cool FANTASY RPG should be like :

I think that my biggest problems with clerics and paladins is having their abilities tied to a God.  I prefer religion to be seperate from abilities in campaigns.

RedFox

I prefer the druid, and I don't particularly like being the party healer, but I got no problem with clerics otherwise.  Go get 'em, I say.

The only change I would make to clerics as they currently stand is to remove "Divine Power" and "Righteous Might" from the general cleric spell list and only allow them to be gained through domains or the Extra Spell feat. They're good enough spells for a cleric to require a little investment. I'd also put them on the Paladin spell list, but they're less powerful there (since the Paladin already has a full BAB and good HP).

"Divine Power" and "Righteous Might" combined with Divine Metamagic (Persistent) are why people say that clerics are one of the two best classes for meleeing (the other being druids with wildshape).

Otherwise, I don't have any problems with clerics. The first character I ever played under 3.x was an evangelical cleric of Pelor, and I still think rather fondly about the game I played him in.

When I play D&D I almost always play a cleric. My preferred class.

I never played much D&D, but last time I did, I played a paladin of that guy.
He is pretty cool.

He also ain't no vanilla fantasy god.
He's the Norse god of single and heroic combats. And let's face it, the Norse were huge into that shit back in tha day, boyyy.
Running: Dogs of WAR - Beer & Pretzels & Bullets
Planning to Run: Godbound or Stars Without Number
Playing: Star Wars D20 Rev.

A lack of moderation doesn\'t mean saying every asshole thing that pops into your head.

Sosthenes

Well, if you compare him with other norse gods, Tyr is a bit boring. And come, he loses his eyes and his arm, and they don't even become artifacts? Laaaame...
;)

In the FR, he has some strange friends, too. Although I'd like to know what drug Ed Greenwood was on to turn the Finnish(?) "Illmater" into a male god of suffering...

Personally, the gaming is the key thing that attracts me to living in the US, but I doubt I ever shall. I fear that it might not live up to the promises made to me by CSI and Bones.

I do think there's something about a Cleric wielding some sort of Holy Blade.  Does a bit more for me than the mace--though, strangely enough, when playing a Fighter, I often take the mace as a backup weapon (if not a longspear).

(Hey, what about House, M.D.?  Hugh Laurie's over here now, and even with those unfamiliar with seeing him play Prinnie in Blackadder the Third, he's making big waves?

As I understand it Greenwood's original concept of gods were more as nongendered/multigendered inhuman and unearthly forces, not the superheroes-with-cleric-followers we see in D&D.
