Title: FtA Question
Post by: KrakaJak on September 25, 2007, 11:34:58 PM
So...this thing about random dungeons has really, really intrigued me to mayhaps purchase FtA. I've thought about buying based on this feature alone! (Goddamn the Pundit and his incredible Network Marketing skills XD)

From those of you who have used it, how easily is this transported to other games? If it's not easily transportable (or even if it is!) how awesome is this feature? Is it as cool as it sounds?

Criteria for easy conversion:
Can I use it for my McWoD game?
Can I use it for my WoD games?
What kind of games (besides FtA) is it a good fit for?

It would be an extremely easy fit into any fantasy game (obviously D&D, but pretty well any other one too).

As for WoD (MC or otherwise), I guess that would depend on what you were doing with it... I mean, if you had a reason to have fantasy dungeons in those games, then sure.

It really is one of the best features of FtA! in my opinion, but clearly its something that does have certain limits.  I mean, it creates DUNGEONS, not cities or buildings or something.
But when it comes to creating dungeons it does it really really well, and easily transplantable to most other systems or settings that would have a need for dungeons.

Well...My McWoD game does have a labrynthine dungeon underneath Disneyland...and I'm looking for a way to randomly generate about 20 floors deep with escalating difficulty.

The only thing I can see getting in the way is:

How does Monster placement work?

Are the Fantasy trappings easy enough to change?

Do items and monsters escalate in power as the dungeon goes deeper?

Monsters are placed according to increasing danger by "dungeon level" (ie. depth).

"Fantasy trappings" are the one thing I mostly left out of the random generator, with a couple of exceptions like pools/fountains, shrines, and alcoves.
I'd found that most of the supposed "random generators" out there were doing things totally backwards; they'd leave it up to you to decide what the room was shaped like or how many doors it had, but they made you roll to see what random objects were in the room.
To me, what makes sense, what you really want out of a random dungeon generator if you're going to use one at all, is for one that makes the corridors, rooms, doors, wall lengths, presence of monsters and traps and treasure, etc for you, and leaves it up to you to decide why the fuck these things would be there in that order.

In other words, it does the crunch, and you fill in with the fluff, instead of the other way around.

But yes, items and objects escalate in power as the dungeon goes deeper.  That's part of what old school is all about, baby.
