Where are they held? Would a WotC network store do it?

The stuff in the box doesn't seem as interesting this year.

Nah. It looks a bit 'meh' this year.

I've backed/supported the LotFP scenario so that should arrive by itself and the only other thing I've got my eye on is the DCC scenario. And maybe a commerative dice. I won't be queing for the dice tower.

I am free Saturday so I may drop by and pick up an item or two. Free is good because you don't need any money to get something.:)

We're now down to two FLGS' participating locally, so I'm going to troop on over to the east side of town and check out what they've got. I've been meaning to go over there anyway, so I'll report on at least one place.

That place, Gateway Games, tends to have a lot of in-store gaming in general, and Free RPG Day is no exception.

Yeah. Interesting to see no WotC or FFG this year, despite having big product releases to pimp.

This is the second year in a row that WotC has declined to be a part of Free RPG Day. I suspect they're going to do their own thing on D&D Game Day or whatever they call it.

As for FFG, I'm surprised. Unless there's a business reason involved in the production of the Age of Rebellion Core Rulebook taking up their focus, I'd think that a second short intro adventure would pay dividends.

I was really hoping to see a short AoR adventure. There was an EotE one last year that I picked up.

Does anyone know anything about Cosmic Patrol or Godsfall?

I know Cosmic Patrol is based on the 30's pulp space stories, but I can't recall any details beyond that.

No store anywhere remotely near here has ever participated before... but now a new store has opened and it looks like they're going all out with games running all day! Very much looking forward to it.

I picked up Cosmic Patrol at GenCon the year it came out.  I've run it a few times and it's always been a hit.  It's very rules light and characters take next to no time to make, if you choose to make your own (default is to pick from a bunch of pre-gens).

By design the game is suppose to have a rotating narrator, but it's just as easy to have 1 GM for the whole thing.  The core book has about 15 missions (written up in 2 page spreads) already in it so it's easy to just pick one and go.  GMing is very easy.

The base mechanic is stat die + a d12 + modifiers vs a d20.  Yep, difficulty is random.

What else do you want to know?

One of my friends came away with 3 books, 5 dice AND the freakin'  meeple dice tower and the tower was not even his first pick, but since no one else wanted it...

No, Free RPG Day is not a big, widely know thing, around here.

I wish I could have gone and grabbed that Castles & Crusades adventure. I'll have to watch ebay, I guess.

We had the stuff at my FLGS, but people really came out to game: 2 Pathfinder Society games, 1 Call of Catthulhu, 1 Dungeon World, and 1 Supers! Revised game (run by yours truly). All five games were full (5-7 people per table), so it was a big hit, I think.

I trooped over to the east side of town --with the kids as willing participants-- to one of the two game stores participating.

It was early afternoon when we arrived, and the pile of freebies was pretty decimated. The Paizo, Troll Lords, Goodman Games, and Lamentations offerings were already gone, and the gaming tables were packed. Gateway Games even had Free RPG Day cookies on hand from the bakery a few storefronts down, which the kids scored.

The kids picked up the 13th Age offering, the Mage the Ascension game, and Godsfall booklet. I grabbed a copy of Mesozoic Mayhem, because my wife is a Paleontologist, and a "choose your own adventure" book featuring time travelling dinos is right up her alley.

Gateway is a small shop, and tables take up half of the space, but the place was full with people playing and browsing the stacks. I made a point of buying a couple of items while there --no Mongoose Traveller like I'd seen there last year-- a copy of FATE Accelerated for the kids to beat on and a copy of the Doctor Who RPG for them as well.

Based on what I saw, Free RPG Day was well received over there at Gateway Games.

I couldn't make it to Game Empire in Pasadena which was hosting RPG events for Free RPG Day, but I dropped by Emerald Knights in Burbank which was doing CCG demos instead. I noticed their RPG section had been hacked to bits compared to when I was there last year, mostly shoved on the bottom shelf out of sight.

Even though they had piles of free stuff, they limited the few people who came for goodies to 2 picks each. I was going to grab Godsfall, but its mostly just the same info you can find on their website. Instead, I grabbed the 13th Age adventure and the new Shadowrun Quickstart that has the Mechwarrior Quickstart in the back too.

We don't even have gaming stores here, much less Free RPG days.

Of course, for me, just about every other week is "free RPG day"...
