This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

For me it's the Yes album

Quote from: XantherExcellent Album.  But I'd have to say for fantasy RPG Led Zepplin III does it the most for me, and Heavy Horses by Jethro Tull.

Speaking of the Zep- "Kashmir" and "the Immigrant song" get me jonesing for a good game as well.

Yeah - "Promontory."  The crazy, mournful fiddle song.  I ran into one of my buddies before gaming a couple of weeks ago in the market and we started singing it to each other in the beer aisle.

(Check's iTunes Library)  Yeah, that's the name.  The same melody is also used in the track "The Kiss", in a bit more of an acoustic form.  The melody of "The Kiss" and "Promontory" come from a work called "The Gael", and you can find other interpretations of it on iTunes, for example.

ADDED:  More info on "The Gael" including an MP3 can be found here: http://www.mohicanpress.com/mo11103.html#The%20Gael

Wow--who knew so many people were floating trapped in a 70s time warp?

I think the only music that makes me think of RPGs with any reliability would be that O Fortuna piece.

Quintessential game songs. Evenings at the Lasertorium listening to Zeppelin and Rush and Floyd did as much or more to shape my concept of high fantasy than watching Conan and Wizards.

Hmmm.  Perhaps I should discuss my large collection of Disco and other 70s music, then.  I was thinking of bringing up the soundtrack for Phantom of the Paradise, too. :D

I'll second the Conan soundtrack and Kashmir from Led Zepplin. Add to that the Legend, Robin Hood, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Braveheart, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Heavy Metal, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly soundtracks.

I'm partial to Yes' Tales from Topographic Oceans, too.

And I've always wanted to run a Dogs of War campaign were the evil vizier, after being shunned as a suitor to the princess, creates several magical dog figurines ("The Dogs of War") and salts them around the kingdom. The figurines would each radiate a different powerful emotion (hate, jealousy, desire for revenge, greed, etc) for miles around driving the kingdom into war. The PCs would have to collect the figurines all the while trying to resist their overwhelming power.

Who'da thunk that so many people started playing RPGs back in the 70s when they first started becoming available?

Honestly, man, can you do anything other than cast snide, one-sentence sidelongs at threads like these?

....

Well it does harken back to my youth and has a big nostalgia factor that can't be denied.  But hey, singing about gollum and the evil one?  How much more fantasy RPG can you get?

On recent music, Wolfmother does a great job for inspiration.  Da Beastie Boyz work to with Whatcha Want.

Want to talk timewarp?  I like me some ome doo-wop from the 30's.  The Inkspots will always make me think of post-apocalytic mayhem. :)

I can go back farther, Wagner also does a great job of getting the juices flowing.

I think next time the party walks into a potential TPK situation I should put on Staying Alive. ;)   Or better yet Five to One, oops that's the 60's.

Aw, man.  You used to make such intelligent and entertaining posts, too.  In a sick, commie kind of way, of course.  Lately, you've become like some sort of sneering French socialist in a beret, slouching against a lamp post on a street corner with your hands shoved in your pockets, spitting at the bourgeoisie as they pass by.  What is it?  Some kind of crisis of purpose?
