Title: Features of a play-by-post Discord adapted system
Post by: FishMeisterSupreme on May 21, 2025, 06:46:10 AM
What would a TTRPG look like if it was meant to be played on play-by-post Discord? This could apply to games closer to DND, or Exalted, or even non combat games.

Mostly just slower. I personally would opt for a lighter system with less combat expected in the setting if you're going pure PbP, but you do you on that.

Pure Discord isn't required though as there are a number of good VTTs out there (my go to is Foundry) and Discord has good voice chat.

Really though my ideal for online play would be a video camera mounted above my writing surface because I prefer to do total improv and just sketch maps and such as needed and that is WAY faster using a pencil or pen than something digital (at least it is for me).

I played in a hybrid 2e game -- some players were live, some on Zoom. The live table had one camera on the DM, two on the players around the table, and one on the table itself (from about 45°/above). As one of the Zoom players, it worked well for me.

I would use side initiative, and have all players actions "go off" or resolve at once, that way players aren't waiting to see what eachother are doing before being able to act. Basically you want the DM to be able to post something, then all the players post something, then repeat.
