This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Apparent some folks are unaware... Fate Core is OGL, which means anyone can make a Fate game. Fate Core is also free, if you want.

If for some reason you choose not to do business with Evil Hat, here are some other options. Check out RPGnow and click on "Fate" system.

Diaspora is a nifty Traveller-inspired scifi game, though it's based on an older form of Fate and could do with some sprucing up.

I'm not familiar with the other stuff, though Mindjammer (transhumanist) looks interesting.
This forum is great in that the moderators aren\'t jack-booted fascists.

Unfortunately, this forum is filled with total a-holes, including a bunch of rape culture enabling dillholes.

So embracing the \'no X is better than bad X,\' I\'m out of here. If you need to find me I\'m sure you can.

One Horse Town

The author of Diaspora drops by every now and then.

Will

Oh cool!

I've been poking around at a STL SciFi Fate game (set in the Oort cloud), and Diaspora has been my launching point.

Brad J Murray, if i recall correctly.

I've only been exposed to Diaspora and Legends of Anglerre as FATE games go. What refinements could benefit Diaspora if it was to be updated to state of the art FATE mechanics?

Will

Off the top of my head:

Fewer Aspects -- they moved from 10 Aspects to 5 at some point because people realized 10 just watered things down. It wasn't that hard to apply Aspects in many situations, so it turned into a distraction.

A lot of the explanations for how things worked were generally cleaned up. I'm not an expert in Fate enough to be super precise about that. Earlier 'Block' was changed to Obstacles, and also 'create an Aspect' in play works more cleanly in Fate Core.

Arguably, fewer skills, although it depends on whether you think the number of skills in Diaspora is a virtue of the thrust of the game.

Simplification, decluttering and clarification then? I can dig that.

Will

Yeah. Also, the Fate Core layout is really nice. Good use of boxes and headers to help clarify skills, for example, and to give a firmer grounding for what you can do with different skills.

The examples of play and zones is a lot more sensible, too, from what I recall.

Mr. Furious

I'm a huge fan of Fate Core.  To my mind it's simple yet elegant and can be hacked in a million different ways.

As for published non-Evil Hat stuff... one of my favourites is The Day After Ragnarok.  The year is 1948, the third year after Ragnarok.  The Nazis succeeded in summoning the Serpent Jormungandr.  The United States succeeded in dropping the world's first atomic bomb on it's head.  Now a thousand miles and more of giant serpent body lay sprawled across the world and all manner of bizarre mutations have arisen as a result.

It's a very pulpy setting, filled with Nazis, serpent cults, and other weirdness.  Available from Atomic Overmind Press, I believe.

Also, if memory serves, Eclipse Phase is getting a conversion guide for Fate at some point in the near future.

Anglachel

I have three non-EH FATE games i like (for more info, just follow the links i provided) :

Age of Arthur - http://wordplaygames.co.uk/?page_id=32

Nova Praxis - http://www.voidstarstudios.com/nova-praxis/

Strange FATE - Here i especially like the new twists to the rules engine...the setting is also cool but not really my cup of tea to play in (the Setting being Kerberos Club) http://www.arcdream.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=42

Soylent Green

A few more non Evil Hat Fate games that come to mind include..

Awesome Adventures
StarBlazer Adventures (out of print)
Legends of Anglerre (out of print)
Strands of Fate
Bulldogs!
Agents of Swing

..and best of all Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands :-)
New! Cyberblues City - like cyberpunk, only more mellow. Free, fully illustrated roleplaying game based on the Fudge system
Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands, a post-apocalyptic western game based on Fate. It\'s simple, it\'s free and it\'s in colour!

RPGPundit

I haven't read the new Mindjammer yet, though it's sitting at my desk a few feet from me in the big pile of Books I Must Review.

I read the original (a sourcebook for Starblazers) and it was really good; I imagine this new version will, hopefully, be even better (it's certainly a lot bigger).

Also, there's always ICONS.

I'll be tossing a Fate Accelerated non-Evil-Hat game onto the pile, but gimme a bit.  The Kickstarter just ended, there's still a lot of stuff to do.  :D
Ugh. Gross. I resent and am embarrassed by the time I spent thinking this site was okay.
