Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Fantasy coolness equivalent for Mecha?

Ok, the "gratuitous mecha" thread has pretty much established that Mecha are really cool. I mean really really cool, to the point that just about any setting becomes cooler with mecha in them.

So the next question is whether there is an equivalent to the mecha in Fantasy? Is there something so cool in fantasy themes that everyone loves it, and that you could even add to non-fantasy settings and instantly make those settings cooler?

Well, this is porbably more of a personal kink, but:  Necromancers.

I love the whole concept, always have.  I like being able to resurrect hordes of shambling dead to do my bidding.

To the extent that at one point, I'd been pondering a whole Fullmetal Alchemist pastiche about necromancy.

At one point I would have said magic, but now I'm not so sure. I think that with Star Wars and The Matrix and wire-fu movies like The One that they've already taken the cool stuff from fantasy and applied it to non-fantasy settings.

I'd say that things that nearly any setting can include that is a fantasy "trope" are:

* Golems, constructs, etc.
* Undead
* Artifacts
* Hybrid animals (griffons, chimerae, manticores, etc)

Not necessarily cool but branched out from fantasy.

Undead and associated (cannibals, ghouls, Necromancers -> Scientist who tamper with Things Man Was Not Meant To Know).
Pointy-eared types.
Short types.
I was going to type Ratmen and then Animal Humanoids but those are as much from Science Fiction as Fantasy.

Silverlion

Dragons. Really if you want something that is the "fantasy" (mind you mecha are a bit fantasy themselves) version of mecha--its dragon

Look at them in SF: Dragons in the Eye of Herod (mentioned on mainland. SF), Dragon Riders of Pern (false fantasy SF), Dragons in Shadowrun, and the Hobbit, Dragons in the Lensmen (Space Opera) series, Dragons in Star wars (Krayt Dragons, and even star crossing Dragons)

Swordfights.  Swordfights improve damn near anything.

Dragons, swordfights and mecha = The Vision of Escaflowne.

Undeath, big monsters, and swashbuckling coolness is all right up there.

Hands down Dragons, make it a katana wielding dragon and you might overload your coolness sensors.

What busts my nuts is that Exalted tries so hard for an Escaflowne vibe but completely misses the boat.

I really don't get the Escaflowne vibe from Exalted at all; last I checked Escaflowne doesn't include dinosaurs that piss heroin...

It can be done.  Downplay Sorcery/Necromancy, supernatural Martial Arts and the other worlds (Yu-Shan, the Underworld, the Wyld, etc.).  Emphasize Charms other than Martial Arts/Sorcery, make Magitech more common, and be free with the Stunt dice when they're in their mecha.  When it comes to Exalted, making it mesh with its inspiration is more of a choice in what components and setting bits to play up or down than anything else.
