Title: [Ebay] Extraordinary Glimpses of Early TSR
Post by: Pierce Inverarity on November 20, 2007, 12:23:01 AM
The fabled Collector's Trove is auctioning off the collection of Kevin Hendryx. 160+ items.

Noteworthy/hilarious/WTF moments galore.

If I had bucks to burn, I'd be going for the Palace of the Silver Princess print negatives!  (holy crap).  If that item goes for less than 2k I'll eat my hat*.

I'd also love to get that letter on the 2e revisions, just to see what was going through their minds.

* I don't wear a hat

EDIT:  there is some other pretty cool sounding stuff in that lot, like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/TSR-Rurik-the-Mad-Campaign-Dungeon-1979_W0QQitemZ130174342255QQihZ003QQcategoryZ44112QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).  I'd love to see how the game developers personally envisioned their games - not for mass market appeal, but to suit whatever whims they might've had.

Oh wow. I hadn't seen that.

Oh man. The Origins Of The Hobby.

The Gameworld = one dude's mad scribblings.* What did ever make us buy somebody else's metaplots?

*Anyone care to buy mine?

Don't know who the redhead is, but she's fine looking.  I had left Lake Geneva for good by then.

Man, it is time to dig out my old gaming shit and sell it off.  Warriors of Mars, anyone?

Yes, the chixxor was hawt, but what really got my pulse racing was that peg-board rack holding all those old (or new I guess) pocket games. I used to HAVE most of those, and I remember ALL of them. And I want them. NOW.

Once a geek always a geek, I guess.

God, I'm getting old, aren't I? Wahhhhhh!

Just Jim Ward.  Those pictures are about 1980, and I'd stopped hanging around much by 1976.  I moved to Minneapolis in 1973 and just returned less and less often.

Dude.

That was a ringing endorsement. I love that shit. Why do you think I started the thread to begin with?

We need that *shakeshead* icon from the CotI boards.

This is my fourth comment. I deleted the first three.

Let´s just say I really really dig the 70ies, 80ies and first half of the nineties photographs of RPG-folks.

Fuck.  My bad.  It was early in the morning, yadda yadda... I'm sorry.  I somehow misread it.  Chalk it up to: dumb. :haw:

(edit: for whatever reason, I read it as being mocking and was wondering if you made the initial post as a snark.)

A0: Never mind, never mind...

Settembrini: That Devo thing floored me. So there were young persons working at TSR with sunglasses, musical judgment and (it seemed at the time) discriminating fashion taste... just like, uh, young PI.

No, I'm not sharing photos. Let's just say: Duran Duran.

I still have Revolt on Antares.  Some days I dream of making a bigger board, with hexes of 2 or 3 inches and lead figures to replace the chits.  Other days I imagine myself using it as the springboard for a campaign world.  It's distilled awesome sauce in a tiny plastic box.

Fuck yeah. You gotta love space mercenaries as imagined by Erol Otus.

Allow me to add that Vampyre was the first TSR product I ever played, even before D&D. It's actually a very good game. Also, Remember the Alamo.

I was so close to getting some stuff like this for free.  In the midst of arguing about who was from a smaller town, I ran into a co-worker who was from Lake Geneva.  He was shocked I'd heard of his hometown.  I admitted why and it turns out he had an uncle that worked at TSR, Dave "Diesel" LaForce.  I just happened to have my Marvel Superheroes RPG with me and I showed him that his uncle was credited as the cartographer. He had a whole bunch of stuff packed up back home that his uncle had given him that he was willing to give me.

I really should call that bastard.

Holy lord, there are some rich nerds out there. :D

Looks like I'll be way off on the Palace of the Silver Princess.  I'm guessing that those might just be the highest valued D&D items that might make it into the Acaeum modules list (http://www.acaeum.com/ddindexes/modcode.html).  Though that's not technically a module... hmm...

And > $400 for a TSR minion's hand written campaign notes. I can't imagine what Gygax's or Arneson's napkin sketches could fetch.

Oh well, as I said above, if I had the money I'd be right in there too.  Unfortunately for me: mortgage, car, etc...

You should find out soon.

I have some 1970s photocopies of Dave and Gary's handwritten notes that I'm putting up for the Collector's Trove.

Also "Warriors of Mars" and 2nd Ed. CHAINMAIL, both of which recently went for over $500 each.

I also still have my first printing Brown Box  that I got in Gary's basement in 1973.  Last time one was up it went for $2500.

But I still USE mine.:(

Some time ago, one sheet from Rob Kuntz's notebook went for $75. And it wasn't a big notebook either. Imagine how much people would pay for an entire binder full of that stuff!

Old Geezer: okay, but then I think you once mentioned you also owned the draft of what would later become the brown box. That's the category where even "envy" is a mild word.
