Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Doubling Die?

A Long Time ago, I owned an RPG that was a science fiction setting that, unfortunately, was not very memorable.  What that means is I have no idea what it was called.  The only clue I have as to what this game was is the die that I still have that came with it.  It's a 16 sided dice, with most sides being a 1, a couple 2's, 4's, 8's and a 16.  There's also two sides with symbols... one is a copyright symbol.  I found a reference to a "doubling die" that sounds remarkably similar in John Kims Free RPG's page called Metascape.  That sounds REAL familiar, only maybe not.  There's only two things I remember about the game... one was a race of people that were almost Sumo-like in physique, and were incredibly strong, and two was a unique device that would "lock in" on demand to the planet's magnetic field and freeze in whatever place it was, regardless.
Is there anyone out there that has a copy of Metascape?  The link on John's site is dead.  Can anyone help me find out if Metascape is the game I'm thinking of?  Thank you in advance!

Tim

Drohem

You're right, it is Metascape.  Noble Knight Game's entry on Metascape talks about the 16-sided die and the "doubling die."

Aardvark892

I think you're right.  It sounds familiar.  And besides, where else could I find a die like this specifically for a (now defunct) game system.  Thanks, Drohem!

I actually own this die. Never owned, read or played the game though. I just bought the die because it was so weird.

They sell the dice on the site for the game. It's not completely defunct. Yopu just can't contain all the real ultimate awesomeness which is MetaScape!!!!

My first Palladium character (gnome illusionist) found a short sword of doubling (damage = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64) and it was cursed with some archmage's soul that took over the gnome on full moons.

How did Metascape use the doubling die?

stu2000

The GM offers players a target number, and the doubling die is rolled along with another die--usually d6, d8, or d10 in the original rules; an assortment of dice in the new rules--to reduce the chance of failure and increase the chance of wildly exceeding your target number.

Note that the D16 metascape die is not the same as a "backgammon" style doubling cube. Its pretty weird.

I've used both doubling dice.  I played a Metascape game at a con.  We had to leave a deposit of a couple bucks for the die while playing.

I later bought the thing, only to never use it.  It's long lost now due to the great RPG purge of 1995.

No doubt about it, Metascape's system was strange.  The doubling die didn't just multiply, it also caused you to change categories IIRC.

As for the backgammon die, I, too, took inspiration from the Palladium Fantasy book to use it in my Rifts game.  The players loved the novelty of the villain using the doubling die for damage - until I rolled a 64 on a critical hit (thus, doubling it again to 128) and essentially killing a PC in one hit.

Which would be odd, as mega=1000.

I am not saying you are wrong, it has been an age and a half since I read anything by Palladium.  I have read goofier things in Palladium books, but not many.  :)
